Ashutosh Gowariker Rules Out 'Lagaan' Remake

Filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, who is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his iconic film 'Lagaan', has made it clear that he has no intention of remaking the movie to suit contemporary audience sensibilities. The director attended a special event in the city on Monday to commemorate the milestone and addressed the media on the sidelines.

No Plans for a Remake

Gowariker stated, "I don't think you should try and remake a film. I think you should appreciate a film that is a classic—I mean, not just 'Lagaan', but any film you find to be a classic, you appreciate it." He further emphasized, "You don't have to emulate it. Try and create your own new idea for a film, because you are trying to create your own voice, your own story."

Celebrating a Masterpiece

The event saw the presence of several prominent figures from the film industry. 'Lagaan' starred Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who came on board after being pursued by Gowariker, alongside Gracy Singh. The film famously clashed at the box office with Sunny Deol's 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha' and earned a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.

Considered a masterclass in filmmaking, 'Lagaan' broke many prevailing box-office rules at the time. It has been included as a case study in team building by numerous educational institutions. The film also introduced a new style of mounting a film in Bollywood, adopting a streamlined approach by hiring professionals for each department. Notably, it was the first Hindi cinema film to use sync sound.

Gowariker's remarks underscore the importance of originality and innovation in filmmaking, encouraging new creators to forge their own paths rather than relying on remakes of beloved classics.
