Farah Khan Reveals How Ayesha Takia Quit Main Hoon Na 2 Weeks Before Shoot
Ayesha Takia left Main Hoon Na, Amrita Rao replaced her

In a shocking revelation that highlights the unpredictable nature of Bollywood casting, filmmaker Farah Khan has disclosed the dramatic last-minute crisis that nearly derailed her directorial debut Main Hoon Na just weeks before filming began in 2004.

The Sudden Departure That Sparked Panic

During a recent nostalgic conversation on her YouTube vlog, Farah Khan revisited the chaotic days preceding the production of what would become one of Bollywood's most beloved films. Just two weeks before the scheduled shoot, with locations in Darjeeling booked, costumes finalized, and the entire team ready to roll, Farah received devastating news - her second lead Ayesha Takia had backed out of the project.

The original cast was firmly locked with Shah Rukh Khan, Zayed Khan, Sushmita Sen, and newcomer Ayesha Takia set to bring the story to life. However, Takia's sudden departure for Imtiaz Ali's Socha Na Tha created a massive void that threatened to delay the entire production.

Gauri Khan's Game-Changing Suggestion

In her moment of panic, help arrived from an unexpected quarter. Gauri Khan, wife of Shah Rukh Khan and producer of the film, stepped in with a crucial suggestion that would ultimately save the day. "Gauri told me, 'Why don't you check with this girl? She's done a Bru ad.' That girl was Amrita Rao," Farah recalled during her conversation with Amrita Rao at the actress's home.

Initially, Farah had her doubts about the casting. When Amrita arrived for their meeting dressed in a simple kurta and jeans, the director struggled to visualize her as Sanjana - the goth, rebellious character central to the film's plot. The contrast between Amrita's real-life persona and the required character seemed too significant to bridge.

The Audition That Changed Everything

Despite her reservations, Farah decided to audition Amrita Rao on Gauri Khan's insistence. The results were nothing short of magical. Farah asked Amrita to perform the emotional scene where Sanjana breaks down and confesses everything to Shah Rukh Khan's character.

"The moment I saw her through the lens, I was stunned," Farah revealed. "She looked completely different - magical. It reminded me of Sridevi. Even when Sridevi's rehearsals seemed okayish, she would light up once the camera rolled."

This transformative quality convinced Farah that she had found her Sanjana, though the challenges were far from over.

Behind-the-Scenes Challenges and Triumphs

The production faced numerous obstacles even after Amrita Rao came on board. In a humorous confession, Farah shared that Amrita had lied about knowing how to ride a bicycle, a skill crucial for a key scene with Shah Rukh Khan and Zayed Khan.

"We were about to shoot the scene where SRK and Zayed are on cycles, and just five minutes before the shot, Amrita told me, 'I don't know how to cycle,'" Farah laughed. "I went hyper - it was my first film! Then Shah Rukh, being Shah Rukh, stepped in and said, 'Don't worry, put her on my cycle.' If you watch that scene closely, you'll see she looks terrified."

To add to the chaos, none of Amrita's costumes reached the set as the delivery truck never arrived. The team had to improvise by borrowing clothes from dancers, cutting them up, and creating a makeshift wardrobe that ultimately defined Sanjana's iconic look.

Despite these challenges, Amrita proved her mettle, particularly during the filming of "Chale Jaise Hawaien," a one-shot song sequence that required tremendous stamina. "Other dancers were fainting due to the cold and oxygen drop, but she kept going," Farah praised.

Ayesha Takia's Disappearance Explained

Farah provided context for Ayesha Takia's abrupt departure, explaining that the actress had initially promised to be away for just four days to shoot for Imtiaz Ali's film but ended up staying for two months. Takia was shooting for Socha Na Tha and couldn't return for Main Hoon Na's preparations.

"I told her, 'You haven't done costume trials or rehearsals - how will we shoot?' She said, 'Sorry ma'am, I can't come. Imtiaz sir hasn't finished the shoot,'" Farah recalled. "I was devastated. It was my first film, and my heroine had disappeared."

The Legacy of Main Hoon Na

Despite the turbulent beginning, Main Hoon Na went on to become a blockbuster success upon its release in 2004. Amrita Rao's portrayal of Sanjana remains one of her most memorable performances, launching her into Bollywood stardom.

Interestingly, Farah noted that Amrita was already juggling multiple projects at the time. "Amrita was already doing six other films then and wasn't even giving me dates!" she fondly remembered. Amrita, laughing, clarified, "No, no - I was just sandwiched between three films!"

The film not only established Farah Khan as a successful director but also created lasting bonds between the cast and crew. During their recent reunion, Amrita recalled a touching moment from the sets when Farah came running after a particularly well-executed scene to express her satisfaction with the casting decision.

This behind-the-scenes drama serves as a testament to how last-minute casting changes, though initially seeming like disasters, can sometimes lead to perfect outcomes that define cinematic history.
