Backstreet Boys Set Sights on 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show
Following Bad Bunny's electrifying performance at the 2026 Super Bowl, legendary pop group the Backstreet Boys have publicly expressed their musical ambition for the next major football event. As the iconic boy band continues their successful Into The Millennium residency at the Las Vegas Sphere, they are now proposing to bring their nostalgic setlist and signature coordinating outfits to another prestigious stage: the 2027 Super Bowl.
Official Announcement During Las Vegas Performance
On February 11, according to fan video footage captured by @jpasc24, the Backstreet Boys made their interest in the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show explicitly clear during their Las Vegas concert. This announcement comes just days after the group appeared in two commercials during this year's championship football game. "What do you guys think? Backstreet Boys: 2027 Super Bowl Halftime," AJ McLean enthusiastically asked the crowd, as documented in the fan video. "Let's make it happen! I mean, why not? It's in Los Angeles, it's right down the street."
Historical Context: From National Anthem to Halftime Ambitions
While the I Want It That Way singers—consisting of Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, and Brian Littrel alongside McLean—are now eager to perform a medley at next year's big game, they haven't always been open to such opportunities. In fact, band member Nick Carter previously revealed that the group declined to headline the 2001 Super Bowl halftime show, opting instead to perform the national anthem.
"At the time, we loved the Whitney Houston rendition of the national anthem. And for us, we got the choice and we passed on the halftime," the 46-year-old told Entertainment Tonight in 2021. "But it was a memorable experience for everyone, and I like to say we did a really good job at the national anthem."
Nostalgia for the Late 90s Era
Reflecting on the 2001 Super Bowl performers NSYNC, Nick Carter praised the late 90s era that both groups helped define. "That again is going back to the era we came from, the late '90s. It was a really beautiful time and I think everybody wants that again," Carter explained. "They want that feeling coming out of this, everything that we have gone through together and society for the past year and a half."
The Backstreet Boys member emphasized how the cultural moment of the late 90s represents a period of collective joy and connection that many fans are seeking to recapture through music and entertainment experiences.
Current Status and Fan Anticipation
While nothing has been officially confirmed by the NFL or Super Bowl organizers regarding the 2027 halftime show lineup, the Backstreet Boys have certainly made their interest known to both their fans and the entertainment industry. The group's public declaration during their Las Vegas residency has generated significant buzz and speculation among their global fanbase.
The potential performance would mark a full-circle moment for the band, who have maintained their popularity across decades while continuing to perform their classic hits alongside newer material. Their coordinated proposal comes at a time when nostalgia acts have proven particularly successful in major entertainment venues and television events.
As the entertainment world watches for official announcements, the Backstreet Boys continue their Las Vegas residency while keeping their Super Bowl aspirations at the forefront of their professional goals for the coming years.
