Rakesh Bedi Addresses Controversy Over 'Dhurandhar' Character Inspiration

In a recent development that has stirred cross-border interest, veteran actor Rakesh Bedi has publicly responded to allegations made by Pakistani politician Nabeel Gabol regarding the character Jameel Jamali in the blockbuster film 'Dhurandhar'. The controversy emerged after Gabol, a prominent leader from Lyari, Pakistan, claimed that the humorous portrayal of Jameel Jamali was inspired by his own persona, leading to a series of statements and social media reactions.

The Origin of the Controversy

Following the release of 'Dhurandhar Part 1', Nabeel Gabol asserted that the character Jameel Jamali mirrored his real-life identity, albeit with a comedic twist that he felt did not accurately represent him. The situation escalated with the debut of 'Dhurandhar Part 2', where Jameel Jamali is unveiled as an Indian agent, sparking intense trolling of Gabol by Indian social media users. This revelation reportedly agitated the Pakistani leader, prompting him to issue multiple statements expressing his discontent.

Rakesh Bedi's Clarification on 'The Lallantop'

During an interview on the platform The Lallantop, Rakesh Bedi directly addressed Nabeel Gabol's claims. Hosts highlighted that Gabol, who ironically refers to himself as "Dhurandhar Wale Jameel Jamali", had expressed dissatisfaction with his on-screen depiction yet conveyed affection towards Bedi by saying, "I love you." In response, Bedi reciprocated the sentiment, stating, "I would like to say, 'I love you, Nabeel Gabol.' I love you very much, and it's a coincidence that I resemble you a little bit. But I can't help it."

Bedi elaborated on the similarities, noting, "Neither your father came to India, nor my father went to Pakistan. But aside from our looks, we look alike; we have a slight heaviness in our bodies, which makes us look alike. I even wore similar clothes in the film, so we looked alike. Other than that there is no similarity between me and him." He firmly denied that his character was a direct representation of Gabol, emphasizing, "My character is not based on Nabeel Gabol. Jameel Jamali is inspired by many such politicians in Pakistan."

Creative Inspiration Behind Jameel Jamali

According to Rakesh Bedi, the character Jameel Jamali was crafted through the collaborative efforts of the film's writers and director Aditya Dhar, drawing from a broader spectrum of Pakistani political figures rather than a single individual. Bedi acknowledged that the Lyari setting of the character naturally led to comparisons with Gabol, given his significant presence and electoral successes in that region. However, he stressed that the portrayal was not intended as a disguised depiction of Gabol, but rather a composite inspired by various personalities.

Box Office Success of 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge'

Amidst this controversy, 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' continues to dominate the box office, achieving remarkable financial milestones. Reports indicate that the film has amassed approximately Rs 985 crore nett in India over 17 days, positioning it on the verge of crossing the Rs 1000 crore nett threshold. This achievement is set to make it the first Bollywood production to reach this historic mark, underscoring its widespread popularity and cultural impact.

The film's engaging narrative, coupled with Bedi's crowd-pleasing performance as Jameel Jamali, has generated substantial buzz on social media, contributing to its commercial triumph. As the entertainment landscape evolves, such cross-border dialogues highlight the interconnected nature of cinema and politics, sparking discussions that transcend geographical boundaries.
