Bimal Oberoi Champions Expansion of 'Dhurandhar' Spy Universe with Character Spin-Offs
In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, actor Bimal Oberoi, who portrays the formidable Shirani—leader of the Baloch United Force (BUF) and a key weapons supplier in the conflict—has made a compelling case for expanding the 'Dhurandhar' universe beyond its current two-film saga. Oberoi believes that the depth of characters created by director Aditya Dhar is so extraordinary that it warrants multiple spin-offs and standalone backstories, potentially making this cinematic world even larger than audiences currently realize.
Oberoi Highlights Potential for Multiple Character Explorations
During the interview, Bimal Oberoi emphasized that his character Shirani is just one of many ripe for further development. He pointed to other key figures in the films, stating, "Not only Shirani. Look at Rakesh Bedi Ji's character. Look at that handsome boy Danish (Pandor); jo jail main hain. Unke character pe bohot kuch ho sakta hai" (The one who is in jail—their characters can have a lot happening around them).
He expanded on this idea, adding, "Even Mustafa Ahmed's Rizwan, uske character ka spin-off ho sakta hai. Kiske character ka spin-off nahi ho sakta?" (Even Mustafa Ahmed’s Rizwan—his character could have a spin-off. Whose character couldn’t have a spin-off?). Oberoi also mentioned that even Akshaye Khanna's Rehman Dakait could have a detailed backstory, showcasing the breadth of possibilities.
Praise for Aditya Dhar's Vision and Talent
Oberoi heaped praise on director Aditya Dhar, crediting him with building a remarkable ensemble of characters. He noted, "Jo Gaurav Gera hai, unki backstory ho sakti hai… kon the, kaise aaye the. Sabhi characters itne kamal ke hai, aap sabhi pe back story bana sakte ho. Shirani ki bhi ban sakti hai. Bohot achchi ban sakti hai" (Take Gaurav Gera—his character could have a backstory… who he was, how he came. All the characters are so remarkable, you could build a backstory for each one. Even Shirani’s could be explored—and it could turn out really well).
He further emphasized Dhar's capabilities, saying, "Looking at Aditya Dhar, the kind of talented person he is, he can do whatever he wants." However, Oberoi acknowledged that the final decision rests with the producers, who must determine the future direction of the franchise.
Context of 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' and Its Success
The discussion comes amid the massive success of 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge,' directed by Aditya Dhar. The film features a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, R Madhavan, and Rakesh Bedi, with supporting roles from Pandor, Bimal Oberoi, Danish Iqbal, Mustafa Ahmed, Gaurav Gera, and others. Since its theatrical release on March 19, 2026, the espionage thriller has earned over Rs 840 crore in just 11 days, setting new records with each passing day and solidifying its place as a blockbuster.
This financial and critical success underscores the potential for further exploration of the 'Dhurandhar' universe, as suggested by Oberoi. The actor's insights highlight not only the richness of the existing narrative but also the untapped opportunities for storytelling that could captivate audiences even more deeply in the years to come.
