Boong Producers: BAFTA Win Unexpected Amid Manipur Conflict

Boong Producers Shujaat Saudagar and Vikesh Bhutani Open Up About BAFTA Triumph and Filming Challenges in Manipur

Producers Shujaat Saudagar and Vikesh Bhutani, backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, have made cinematic history by securing the BAFTA Award in the Best Children's and Family Film Category for their film Boong. In a recent revelation, the duo confessed that this monumental global recognition was entirely unforeseen when they initially decided to support the project.

A Story That Demanded to Be Told

Speaking exclusively, Shujaat Saudagar and Vikesh Bhutani emphasized that their primary motivation was the powerful narrative crafted by director Lakshmipriya Devi. They shared that the compelling story, which offered a unique glimpse into India's cultural tapestry, was the sole driving force behind their involvement.

Shujaat Saudagar recounted his initial reaction to the script, stating, "The first time I heard the script, I experienced intense goosebumps. I immediately recognized that Lakshmi had to tell this deeply personal story. It was not just a film; it was an authentic peek into the heart of India."

Filming in Manipur Amidst Unforeseen Turmoil

Vikesh Bhutani disclosed that production commenced in 2023, with the team entirely unaware that Manipur, the film's shooting location, would soon be engulfed in severe conflict. He explained, "We assembled talent from Mumbai to ensure international production quality. We began filming in 2023, facing numerous logistical hurdles over approximately 45 days spread across two months. Tragically, just one week after we wrapped shooting, violent clashes erupted in the region."

The conflicts, which started in May 2023, continue to devastate Manipur, displacing countless families and creating a humanitarian crisis. During the BAFTA acceptance speech, director Lakshmipriya Devi expressed a heartfelt hope for peace in the state. Echoing this sentiment, Saudagar added, "There is no shortage of hate in our world today. The least we can do is utilize our artistic craft and public platform to actively spread love and compassion."

Aspirations for Broader Audience Reach

Boong initially received a limited theatrical release in 2024. However, following its historic BAFTA victory, the producers are now optimistic about reaching a much wider audience. Shujaat Saudagar elaborated on their future plans, saying, "We are eagerly awaiting the return of Lakshmipriya, Farhan, and Ritesh to discuss our next strategic steps. Our primary objective is to secure a prominent OTT platform to ensure this important story reaches viewers globally."
