Dhurandhar 2 Controversy: FIR Over Gurbani Scene with Madhavan

Dhurandhar 2 Makers Face Legal Action Over Alleged Disrespect to Sikh Scriptures

The upcoming Bollywood film Dhurandhar 2 has ignited a significant controversy, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) at Mumbai's Mulund Police Station. The complaint centers on a specific scene featuring actors R Madhavan and Ranveer Singh, which has been accused of disrespecting sacred Sikh scriptures.

Shiv Sena Leader Files Official Complaint Against Film Team

The FIR was lodged by Gurjyot Singh Keer, a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and president of the organization 'Sikhs in Maharashtra.' Keer has raised strong objections to a sequence in the film where Madhavan's character is depicted holding a cigarette while reciting lines from the Guru Gobind Singh Dasam Granth, a revered religious text in Sikhism.

The complaint formally names actor R Madhavan, co-star Ranveer Singh, and filmmaker Aditya Dhar as accused parties, alleging they have shown blatant disrespect towards Gurbani (Sikh hymns). This development has sparked widespread discussion within both the entertainment industry and religious communities.

Community Leader Condemns Scene as "Deeply Hurtful and Unacceptable"

Gurjyot Singh Keer took to Instagram to share a detailed video outlining his grievances. In his post, he wrote: "I strongly condemn the blatant disrespect shown towards Gurbani by the makers of Dhurandhar 2. Portraying a character, played by @actormaddy, talking to @ranveersingh while holding a cigarette and reciting sacred Gurbani is deeply hurtful and unacceptable."

He emphasized the spiritual significance of the scriptures, stating: "Gurbani is not mere dialogue, it is divine, sacred, and holds immense spiritual significance for the Sikh community. Such depiction reflects ignorance and a lack of sensitivity towards our faith." Keer called for peaceful protests and demanded a sincere apology from the filmmakers to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the broader Sikh community.

R Madhavan Issues Clarification, Claims Misunderstanding

In response to the growing controversy, actor R Madhavan has publicly addressed the issue through a video message on social media. He expressed gratitude for the audience's love for the film but clarified there appears to be a misunderstanding regarding the contentious scene.

Madhavan explained: "I recently learned that some people have been hurt by the perception that I smoked a cigarette while reciting lines from Guru Gobind's Dasam Granth. I want to clarify that this is not accurate. There seems to be some misconception because I am fully confident that during this scene, director Aditya Dhar, who pays more attention to these details than I do, instructed me to extinguish the cigarette before delivering the lines."

The actor provided specific details about the filming process: "He told me that while saying these lines, I should put out the cigarette, and there would be no smoke shown on screen, nor would I be holding a cigarette because this is sacred and pure for us. I properly extinguished the cigarette, and there is no smoke from my mouth, nor any trace of a cigarette throughout the entire scene. We never intend to hurt anyone, knowingly or unknowingly."

Madhavan further affirmed his respect for the Sikh community, noting his personal practice of visiting the Golden Temple before every film release. He reiterated: "At the beginning of the scene, I had a cigarette in my hand, but then I properly put it out. And well before my lines, there is absolutely no smoke in the scene. Please forgive us, but we certainly did not do this work."

Brotherhood and Sensitivity in Creative Expression

This incident highlights the delicate balance between creative freedom and religious sensitivity in Indian cinema. The filmmakers now face legal scrutiny while navigating community sentiments. The controversy underscores how cinematic depictions can inadvertently offend religious groups, requiring careful consideration during production.

The outcome may influence future portrayals of religious elements in Bollywood, emphasizing the need for greater cultural awareness and consultation with community representatives during filmmaking.
