Dhurandhar 2 KDM Issues Cause 500 Theatre Show Cancellations

Dhurandhar Sequel Release Hit by Technical Snag, Hundreds of Shows Cancelled Nationwide

The highly anticipated sequel 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' has officially hit cinemas worldwide on March 19, 2026, generating immense excitement that has reportedly surpassed the first installment. However, the release has been significantly marred by a major technical issue that led to the cancellation of numerous paid preview shows across India.

Paid Previews Plagued by Last-Minute Cancellations

While the Ranveer Singh-starrer film officially premiered on March 19, many theatres had scheduled special paid previews for March 18. These previews, however, faced widespread cancellations due to a critical failure in the distribution chain. The root cause has been identified as a delay in providing the necessary Key Delivery Message (KDM) to authorized theatres.

Theatre Owner Manoj Desai Voices Strong Discontent

Prominent theatre owner Manoj Desai, who operates Gaeity, Galaxy, and Maratha Mandir cinemas, expressed clear frustration with the film's producers, Jio Studios. "They did not give us the KDM. So how are we supposed to run the picture?" Desai questioned. He confirmed that six shows across his three theatres were cancelled as a direct result.

Desai's grievance extends far beyond his own establishments. He revealed that the issue was not isolated, stating, "It wasn't just my theatres. Across all of India, about 500 theatres did not receive the KDM, and their shows were cancelled." This points to a systemic failure affecting a significant portion of the film's domestic release strategy.

Understanding the Critical Role of KDM in Cinema

For those unfamiliar with the term, a Key Delivery Message (KDM) is a small, encrypted XML file that acts as a crucial security key. It is required to unlock and play an encrypted Digital Cinema Package (DCP), which is the standard digital format for modern films. The KDM system functions as a Digital Rights Management (DRM) tool, designed to combat piracy by restricting a movie to specific, authorized theatre servers and, importantly, to a precise time window for exhibition. Without a valid KDM, a theatre is simply not authorized or technically able to screen the film.

Allegations of Producer Negligence and Scheduling Conflicts

Manoj Desai elaborated on the sequence of events, alleging negligence from the production side. "They were running late and they are not answerable to anyone," he claimed. He further explained that despite an agreed-upon schedule where the film's official 'mahurat' (auspicious start time) was set for 5 PM, and theatres had complied with not starting shows before this time, the essential KDMs were still not delivered promptly.

"We had agreed to it and yet they did not send us KDM. They sent us the KDM two hours after the scheduled show time. Hence so many shows were cancelled at around 500 theatres," Desai stated, highlighting the direct link between the delayed technical delivery and the mass cancellations. This delay represents a substantial logistical and financial setback for affected cinema owners on what should have been a lucrative opening day for a blockbuster release.

The incident casts a shadow over the otherwise euphoric reception for 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', raising questions about distribution logistics for major studio releases and their impact on theatre partners and audiences alike.
