Director Ranjith Balakrishnan Arrested Following Actress's Sexual Assault Complaint

Malayalam film director Ranjith Balakrishnan was arrested late Tuesday night after a young actress working in his current production filed a formal complaint against him. The actress alleged that Balakrishnan entered her caravan without permission at a shooting location in Fort Kochi and attempted to sexually assault her.

Following his arrest, Balakrishnan was remanded to 14 days in judicial custody and is currently lodged at the Ernakulam sub jail. Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, indicating serious legal proceedings ahead.

The actor referred specifically to her allegation of sexual assault during an audition for the film 'Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha' back in 2009. "Karma is a bitch, it leaves nobody," she stated. "Whatever goes around comes around. He may be an acclaimed director or a famous figure, but this recent incident proves that he is essentially not a good human being."

15-Year Delay in Coming Forward Explained

The Bengali actress explained why it took her 15 years to come forward with her allegations. "Back then, I knew no one. Social media was not that relevant. My case was kind of nullified because of time constraints and technical issues," she revealed. "Maybe he thought he would go scot-free yet again. But no."

She expressed strong support for the current complainant and expressed hope that this case would be pursued properly through the legal system, unlike her own experience where procedural limitations prevented a conclusive outcome despite her efforts.

Call for Workplace Safety and Accountability

The actor emphasized the urgent need for stronger safety measures for women in workplace environments. "These kinds of sexual predators should be put behind bars," she asserted. "This should be set as an example that women deserve respect in their workplace."

She stressed that no individual's professional status should provide immunity from accountability when it comes to sexual misconduct allegations.

Kerala Government Assures Full Support to Survivor

Kerala Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian has publicly stated that the government stands firmly with the survivor in this case. He emphasized that action will be taken regardless of the individual's professional status or social standing.

Cherian noted that while Ranjith Balakrishnan was appointed to a cultural position based on his professional contributions, "no one is above the law." The minister urged survivors to come forward without fear and assured that institutional support systems are in place.

To strengthen the handling of such cases, three senior police officers have been specially tasked with overseeing investigations into sexual misconduct allegations within the entertainment industry.

The case has sparked renewed conversations about workplace safety in the film industry and the importance of creating environments where survivors feel supported in coming forward with allegations of misconduct.
