Man Arrested for Stealing Phones from Dharna Site in Panchkula
In a significant breakthrough, the Panchkula Police have apprehended the primary suspect in a high-profile smartphone theft case, recovering three stolen devices with an estimated value of Rs 3.6 lakh. The arrest follows a complaint filed earlier this month regarding thefts from a protest site in Sector 5, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat crime in the region.
Details of the Theft and Investigation
According to official reports, the incident occurred on March 15, when Vikas Singh, a resident of Gohana in Sonipat, reported the theft of four mobile phones from his tent at a dharna site in Panchkula's Sector 5. The theft took place around 1.40 am, prompting immediate action from local authorities. A case was registered at the Sector 5 police station, and an investigation was launched to track down the culprits.
The Crime Branch team from Sector 19, led by incharge Mukesh Saini, took charge of the probe. Their efforts culminated in the arrest of the main accused, identified as Vishal, also known as Baleda, a resident of Mouli Complex in Chandigarh. The arrest was made on March 24, after days of diligent police work and surveillance.
Recovery of Stolen Phones and Legal Proceedings
Following Vishal's arrest, interrogation led to the recovery of three of the four stolen smartphones on March 25. The recovered devices include an Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, and a OnePlus 6, collectively valued at approximately Rs 3.6 lakh. These high-end phones were stolen from the protest site, underscoring the targeted nature of the theft.
Police officials, including ACP (Crime) Arvind Kamboj, confirmed that the recovered mobile phones will be returned to their rightful owners after completing the necessary legal procedures. Vishal was produced before a court on Thursday and has been remanded to judicial custody, pending further legal action.
Ongoing Search for Accomplice
During the investigation, authorities uncovered evidence suggesting the involvement of another individual in the theft. The police are actively searching for this second suspect, and efforts are underway to bring them to justice. This development indicates that the theft may have been a coordinated effort, with multiple parties involved in the crime.
The Panchkula Police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring public safety and cracking down on such incidents, especially in sensitive locations like protest sites. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.
