Kolkata: Smita Pandey, the administrator and commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), has issued a heartfelt appeal to the city's residents, urging them to actively participate in the World Yoga Day celebrations scheduled for June 21, 2026, in Kolkata.
Maha-Yoga Campaign
Encouraging widespread involvement in the Maha-Yoga campaign, Pandey called upon citizens to bring their yoga mats and gather at designated locations near their homes. These include institutions, schools, playgrounds, parks, clubs, rooftops, society open spaces, and streets approved by the Kolkata Police.
Event Timing and Appeal
The yoga session will take place from 6:30 am to 7:45 am on June 21, 2026. "I humbly request everyone to participate and help make this citywide event a success. Together, let us contribute to keeping Kolkata healthy," Pandey stated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be present in Kolkata on that day to lead the yoga initiative, adding significance to the event.
Organisation and Theme
The KMC, under the joint management of the Government of West Bengal and the Government of India, will organize the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations in the city. The theme for this year is "Yoga for Healthy Living."
Call for Participation
Pandey extended an invitation to students, youth, senior citizens, government employees, workers, athletes, healthcare professionals, social organizations, clubs, associations, and people from all communities to come together for the event. She emphasized yoga's role in promoting physical and mental well-being, describing the campaign as an opportunity for citizens to embrace a healthier lifestyle and celebrate India's ancient tradition of yoga as part of a global movement.
