UP Plans Five New Integrated AYUSH Hospitals and Colleges

The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated a project to establish five new integrated AYUSH hospitals and colleges across the state, as announced by Principal Secretary of AYUSH, Ranjan Kumar, on Monday. This initiative is part of the state's efforts to strengthen India's traditional medical systems while expanding access to affordable healthcare and professional education.

Locations and Scope

The proposed institutions will be set up in the divisions of Gonda, Mirzapur, Meerut, Agra, and Basti. These facilities will offer education and clinical services in AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) alongside modern health sciences, integrating traditional and contemporary medical practices.

Progress and Preparations

Director General of AYUSH and Mission Director of India Ayush Mission, Chaitra V, confirmed that land has been identified for all five campuses and preparatory work is underway. She stated, “Four of the identified land parcels have already been transferred to the AYUSH department, while the transfer process for the Basti site is in its final stages.” She added that the blueprint for the integrated colleges and hospitals is being prepared.

The institutions are envisioned not only as teaching centers but also as hubs for research and innovation. Both Kumar and Chaitra V emphasized that research on Ayurvedic medicines, yoga therapy, lifestyle-based treatment approaches, and other traditional healthcare practices will be encouraged. The colleges are expected to house modern laboratories, teaching hospitals, research facilities, and training centers.

Impact on Education and Accessibility

Kumar noted, “The move is expected to increase access to professional medical education in regions that currently lack such institutions.” Chaitra V added, “Students from smaller towns and rural districts would be able to pursue AYUSH education closer to home rather than relocating to larger cities.” This development aims to decentralize medical education and make traditional healthcare more accessible to underserved areas.
