Veteran Doordarshan Newsreader Sarla Maheshwari Passes Away at 71 in Delhi
Veteran Doordarshan newsreader Sarla Maheshwari, a household name on Indian television through the 1980s and 1990s, died in Delhi on Thursday at the age of 71. The news was confirmed by family friend and broadcaster Shammi Narang, who announced her demise on social media platforms X and Instagram.
A Pioneering Career in Television News
Maheshwari was part of Doordarshan from 1976 to 2005, belonging to the pioneering generation of television newsreaders in India. During this era, daily broadcasts were limited, and the medium was still in its formative years. She joined the public broadcaster after completing her PhD from Delhi University, embarking on a nearly three-decade-long career that witnessed the transformation of television news from black-and-white broadcasts to the colour era.
Shammi Narang, who co-anchored news bulletins with her, expressed deep sorrow in his announcement. "I feel utmost grief in announcing the sad demise of my ex co-News anchor at Doordarshan, Sarala Maheshwari," he said. Remembering her contributions and personality, Narang added, "Beautiful not just in appearance but even more so at heart, she had a remarkable command over language and was a reservoir of knowledge. Her presence on the Doordarshan screen had a unique aura. She respected everyone and uplifted every space she was part of."

Doordarshan National also paid tribute to Maheshwari on X, recalling her enduring legacy. "A heartfelt tribute from the Doordarshan family to Smt. Sarla Maheshwari. She was a respected and esteemed newsreader of Doordarshan, who carved out a special place in the Indian news world with her gentle voice, precise pronunciation, and dignified presentation. Her simplicity, restraint, and personality established deep trust in the hearts of viewers."
Her last rites are scheduled to be held at Nigam Bodh Ghat at 4 pm, as per family arrangements. Maheshwari's career spanned a critical period in Indian media history, where she became synonymous with reliability and grace on screen, helping shape public trust in television journalism during its nascent stages.
As a key figure in Doordarshan's early years, Sarla Maheshwari's passing marks the end of an era for Indian broadcasting, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and warmth that continues to inspire generations of journalists and viewers alike.
