Drishyam 3 Worldwide Release Date Announced: Mohanlal Starrer Hits Theatres April 2
The highly anticipated Malayalam thriller Drishyam 3, starring superstar Mohanlal, has officially locked its worldwide theatrical release for April 2, 2026. This announcement has sent waves of excitement through the fan community, marking the return of one of Indian cinema's most successful franchises.
Director Jeethu Joseph Reveals Creative Vision for Rural Setting
In a recent exclusive interview with The New Indian Express, director Jeethu Joseph shared fascinating insights into his creative approach for the third installment. He emphasized that the film's narrative, set in the fictional town of Rajakkad within Idukki district, demands authenticity over stylistic flair.
"For a story set in rural Idukki, I can't use soft lighting and make it look like a Scandinavian thriller. It might look stylish, but to me it would feel alien," Joseph explained. This deliberate choice reflects his commitment to maintaining the grounded, realistic atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the Drishyam series.
Defending Cinematographer Satheesh Kurup's Artistic Choices
The director also addressed common criticisms regarding the visual style of his films, particularly defending his frequent collaborator, cinematographer Satheesh Kurup. Kurup, who has lensed Drishyam 3, often faces unwarranted blame for what some perceive as less stylish visuals.
"People often blame my cinematographer Satheesh, but that's unfair. He delivers exactly what I want," Joseph stated firmly. He highlighted that Kurup's work varies significantly based on the project's requirements, citing their previous collaboration 12th Man as an example of a completely different visual approach with an Agatha Christie-style whodunnit feel.
Joseph noted that while that particular aesthetic cannot be replicated for Drishyam 3, they have experimented with similar stylistic elements in another project, Valathu Vashathe Kallan, also shot by Kurup.
Fifth Collaboration Between Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph
This film marks the fifth collaboration between Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph, a director-actor duo that has consistently delivered compelling cinema. Their creative synergy has been instrumental in shaping the Drishyam franchise's success story.
The narrative of Drishyam 3 will explore the next chapter in the life of Georgekutty, the character portrayed by Mohanlal that has become iconic in Indian cinema. "The film focuses on what happens in Georgekutty's life after four-and-a-half years. That is the crux of the story," Joseph revealed earlier.
The makers confirmed that the overwhelming response to the first two installments convinced them that Georgekutty's journey had more layers to uncover. "Only after detailed talks with Jeethu did we finalize this new version," they shared, indicating careful planning behind the sequel.
Extensive Filming Across Kerala Locations
The production team filmed Drishyam 3 across multiple picturesque locations in Kerala, including Thodupuzha, Vagamon, and Ernakulam. These settings contribute to the authentic rural atmosphere that defines the film's visual identity.
Mohanlal completed his portions for the film in December, bringing his character to life once again under Joseph's direction. Fans worldwide are now eagerly counting down to the April release, anticipating another masterful blend of suspense and drama.
As one of the most awaited films of 2026, Drishyam 3 promises to continue the franchise's legacy of intelligent storytelling and powerful performances, staying true to its roots while exploring new narrative dimensions.
