"For a story set in rural Idukki, I can't use soft lighting and make it look like a Scandinavian thriller. It might look stylish, but to me it would feel alien," Joseph explained. This deliberate choice reflects his commitment to maintaining the grounded, realistic atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the Drishyam series.
Defending Cinematographer Satheesh Kurup's Artistic Choices
The director also addressed common criticisms regarding the visual style of his films, particularly defending his frequent collaborator, cinematographer Satheesh Kurup. Kurup, who has lensed Drishyam 3, often faces unwarranted blame for what some perceive as less stylish visuals.
"People often blame my cinematographer Satheesh, but that's unfair. He delivers exactly what I want," Joseph stated firmly. Joseph noted that while that particular aesthetic cannot be replicated for Drishyam 3, they have experimented with similar stylistic elements in another project, Valathu Vashathe Kallan, also shot by Kurup.
