Ektaa Kapoor Reveals Rajinikanth's Crucial Role in Her TV Career Launch
Ektaa Kapoor: Rajinikanth Helped Launch My TV Career

Ektaa Kapoor Credits Rajinikanth for Pivotal Career Break in Television Industry

Ektaa Kapoor, widely regarded as a revolutionary figure in Indian television and a pioneer through her groundbreaking shows, recently opened up about a defining moment early in her professional journey. In a candid interview, she revealed that her entry into the television industry was significantly aided by the legendary actor Rajinikanth, marking a turning point that would eventually reshape Indian TV.

The Fateful Meeting Arranged by Rajinikanth

Recalling the incident, Ektaa shared that Rajinikanth, a close friend of her father Jeetendra, visited their home for lunch. Noticing her subdued demeanor, he inquired about her concerns. "Once Rajinikanth came to my house for lunch. He saw I was upset. When he asked me what I wanted to do, I said, 'I just want to work.' I was upset because I didn't have work," she recounted. Impressed by her determination, Rajinikanth offered to help by arranging a meeting, though he clarified he could not guarantee anything beyond that.

This meeting proved instrumental as Rajinikanth connected her with Kalanidhi, the granddaughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. This connection led to Ektaa's first opportunity: a non-prime-time South Indian television show. However, skepticism arose regarding how a North Indian could effectively manage a South Indian production.

Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Success

Undeterred by doubts, Ektaa and her team devised a creative solution. They wrote the show in Hindi, dispatched her team to shoot with local actors, and had to purchase airtime slots independently. Against all odds, the show soared to become the number one program in its slot. "We wrote the show in Hindi, sent my team to shoot with local actors, and it became the number one show. I then used its TRPs as proof and started getting opportunities in Hindi television," Ektaa explained.

Building on this triumph, she later adapted the same concept into Hindi as 'Ghar Ek Mandir', which solidified her presence in the industry. Her major breakthrough arrived when she pitched 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' to Star Plus, a series that redefined Indian television and cemented her legacy as a trailblazer.

Addressing Nepotism and Personal Motivations

Despite her entry being facilitated through her father's friendship with Rajinikanth, Ektaa firmly dismissed any notions of nepotism, labeling it as "non-existent" in her case. She emphasized that her success stemmed from hard work and innovation rather than familial connections.

In an earlier podcast with Usha Kakade Productions, Ektaa also disclosed a deeply personal reason for embarking on her career at a young age. At 17, she was frequently socializing with friends, skipping college, and enjoying life. Her father issued an ultimatum: focus on studies or find work, or he would arrange her marriage. "That scared me so much that I felt I had to start working. It was like my dad had hung a sword over my head," she admitted.

Ektaa expressed that she was unprepared for marriage at that stage and simply wished to savor life. "I was enjoying life a lot — sometimes partying, sometimes travelling. At 18, who wanted to get tied into the bond of marriage? I was like I don't want to get into all this. I wanted to work, and even later I kept working and never got married," she added, highlighting how this personal drive propelled her forward.

Through these revelations, Ektaa Kapoor's journey underscores the blend of serendipitous opportunities, relentless perseverance, and personal resolve that forged her path in the entertainment world, ultimately transforming the landscape of Indian television.
