Gautami Kapoor Takes Extended Break from Instagram Following Toxic Comments

Bollywood actress Gautami Kapoor, known for her candid nature, has made the difficult decision to step away from Instagram completely after facing a barrage of abusive comments that severely impacted her mental wellbeing. The actress, who previously shared regular dance videos and lighthearted content, has not posted anything on the platform for more than two months.

"Social Media Became a Very Toxic Space for Me"

In an exclusive conversation with Bombay Times, Gautami opened up about her sudden disappearance from social media. "It's been over two months since I posted anything. Social media became a very toxic space for me," she revealed. "I was receiving horrible, disrespectful comments — not something I needed to read first thing in the morning."

The actress emphasized that she has reached a stage in life where external validation is no longer necessary. "I've reached a stage in life where I don't need validation from anyone. I am happy in my own space," she stated firmly.

Family Comments Crossed the Line

Gautami explained that the situation escalated when comments began targeting her family and loved ones. "Things were said about my family and people I love. That's why I chose to distance myself from social media," she shared. The actress has discovered unexpected benefits from her break, noting, "Since I stopped checking Instagram, I've realised I suddenly have so much extra time."

The Breaking Point That Forced Her Decision

Recalling the specific incident that prompted her departure, Gautami described a particularly damaging experience. "The comments coming my way were so awful that I don't have words to describe what they did to my mental health and peace," she confessed.

"A few weeks ago, early one morning, I checked my reels, and the first thing I saw was a horrible comment. It was explicit and explosive, and it put me in a very bad headspace. I felt extremely demotivated. I didn't like feeling that way, so I consciously decided to keep my life private."

Work Should Not Depend on Follower Counts

Gautami also expressed strong disappointment with the entertainment industry's growing obsession with social media metrics. "Over the past several months, many people told me that work opportunities now depend on the number of Instagram followers you have. I was shocked," she revealed.

The actress, who has appeared in films including De De Pyaar De 2, emphasized the organic nature of her social media growth. "My followers and growth have always been organic. I don't understand how someone's body of work can be judged by follower counts," she stated, questioning the industry's shifting priorities.

Future Social Media Plans

While Gautami has taken a firm stance against returning to regular social media use, she hasn't ruled out a complete permanent departure. "I'll only return to social media when I have something to share about my work," she clarified, indicating that any future presence would be strictly professional rather than personal.

The actress's experience highlights the growing mental health challenges faced by public figures in the digital age, particularly women in the entertainment industry who face disproportionate online harassment. Her decision to prioritize her wellbeing over social media engagement serves as a powerful statement about setting boundaries in an increasingly connected world.
