Geeta Gandbhir Makes Oscar History with Dual Nominations
While Neeraj Ghaywan's 'Homebound,' supported by Dharma Productions, may have exited the Oscars race, India has a significant reason to celebrate at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards. Indian-American filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir has achieved a historic milestone by securing two nominations in the same year, marking a proud moment for the global Indian community.
Excitement and Recognition for Nominated Films
Geeta Gandbhir's films, 'The Devil Is Busy' and 'The Perfect Neighbour,' have been nominated in the Best Documentary Short and Best Documentary Feature categories, respectively. Speaking from the United States during the final voting phase, Geeta expressed her thrill about the recognition. In an interview with News18, she shared, "We're thrilled to be nominated. It's such an honour. This final period is about promoting the film as much as possible and reaching out to audiences, hoping they watch it. Most importantly, we're excited to have a platform to discuss the critical issues addressed in 'The Perfect Neighbour.'"
Reflecting on her emotions ahead of the ceremony, Geeta added, "I'm nervous, but being nominated feels like a win already. To be chosen by peers who inspire us is a tremendous honour. This year is exceptional, with all films carrying significant importance."
Oscars 2026: A Landmark Year for Inclusivity
The 98th Academy Awards is being hailed as one of the most inclusive editions in history. The film 'Sinners' has set a record with 16 nominations—the highest ever for any film—featuring ten Black nominees. Additionally, filmmaker Chloé Zhao has become the first woman of colour to receive two nominations in the Best Director category, while cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw is the first woman of colour nominated for Best Cinematography.
Geeta commented on this progress, stating, "That's always positive. Many of us in the US have been advocating for diversity. At a time when inclusivity is often dismissed, this recognition is incredibly vital."
Empowering Minority Storytellers
Discussing her nomination as an Indian-American filmmaker, Geeta emphasized that such achievements pave the way for more diverse voices. She explained, "It's a step forward. It's wonderful when someone from a minority community is nominated, though I'm not the first. Many filmmakers, like those behind 'The Elephant Whisperers,' have been recognized, especially in documentaries. This sets a precedent, showing that the Oscars have an international focus and our stories resonate, opening doors for other minority communities."
Celebrity Support for Meaningful Cinema
Geeta also acknowledged the role of celebrities in amplifying important films. Alongside producer Guneet Monga Kapoor, she praised Priyanka Chopra Jonas for using her global influence to support projects like 'Anuja.' She noted, "Celebrities can lend visibility and credibility to films. While it doesn't guarantee votes, having a track record of support helps a film stand out significantly."
About 'The Perfect Neighbour'
Currently available on Netflix, 'The Perfect Neighbour' revisits the tragic 2023 killing of Ajike Owens in Florida. The documentary uses police body-camera footage to reconstruct the event and explores the theme of "weaponised racism," offering a powerful critique of systemic injustice.
