Sharad Singh Thakur Announces Hindi Biopic on Revered Spiritual Figure Neem Karoli Baba
Filmmaker Sharad Singh Thakur is set to bring the inspiring life and profound teachings of the revered spiritual figure Neem Karoli Baba to the silver screen with his upcoming Hindi film titled 'Shree Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj'. This ambitious cinematic project aims to explore the guru's enduring legacy, his widespread influence, and the spiritual wisdom that continues to resonate with devotees across India and around the globe.
Subodh Bhave to Portray the Spiritual Leader in Multi-Part Narrative
In a significant casting decision, Marathi actor Subodh Bhave has been chosen to step into the role of Neem Karoli Baba, bringing the spiritual leader's persona to life. Thakur, who also wrote the story and screenplay, has designed the narrative as a multi-part cinematic journey to comprehensively capture different phases of Baba's life and his lasting impact.
According to the director, the story will unfold across three distinct instalments. The first two parts have already been completed and are slated for release in quick succession. "We have completed two parts, which will be released in succession. We plan to shoot the third part soon, which will begin from Baba's demise in 1973 and depict how Kainchi Dham, one of Neem Karoli Baba's ashrams, was developed," Thakur revealed in an interview with Mid-Day.
Backed by Extensive Research and Family Approval
While another film on the spiritual guru, titled 'Hanuman Ansh: Baba Neem Karori Maharaj', is also in the pipeline, Thakur emphasizes that his project stands apart due to the meticulous groundwork and official permissions involved. The biopic has been crafted after securing rights from the guru's family and conducting detailed research spanning several years.
Thakur elaborated, "I bought the rights from Baba's family. Girija, his daughter, is 80 years old now. I met her as well as many of those with whom Baba interacted. We did research for four years before beginning the movie. We are planning to release it in April." This approach ensures authenticity and respect for the spiritual leader's legacy.
Addressing Myths and Correcting Misconceptions
The film will also aim to clarify and correct certain popular stories and myths associated with Neem Karoli Baba. One widely circulated belief links the spiritual leader with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, suggesting that Jobs named his company Apple after visiting Baba's ashram in India in 1974 and learning that apples were the guru's favourite fruit.
Thakur firmly dismissed this story, stating, "This is not true at all as they had never met. I have cleared this myth in the movie." By addressing such misconceptions, the film seeks to present an accurate and nuanced portrayal of Baba's life and teachings.
Global Influence and Celebrity Followers
Neem Karoli Baba's spiritual influence has transcended geographical boundaries, attracting a diverse array of followers from around the world. Among his well-known admirers are Hollywood actress Julia Roberts, who has spoken about feeling spiritually drawn to him after seeing his photograph, and spiritual teacher Ram Dass.
In India, prominent figures such as cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Anushka Sharma have openly expressed their reverence for the spiritual leader, frequently visiting his ashram in Vrindavan. This widespread devotion underscores Baba's lasting impact on individuals from various walks of life.
The film 'Shree Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj' promises to be a heartfelt tribute to Neem Karoli Baba, blending cinematic artistry with spiritual depth.
