Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the revamped UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme and inaugurated a new terminal at Jodhpur airport in Rajasthan. The initiative aims to further enhance regional air connectivity and make air travel more affordable for the common citizen.
Key statistics and achievements
Launched in 2016, the UDAN scheme has so far operationalised 669 routes and connected 95 airports, heliports and water aerodromes, benefiting more than 1.66 crore passengers, according to an official statement. The revamped version is expected to add more routes and airports, particularly in underserved regions.
New terminal at Jodhpur airport
The newly inaugurated terminal at Jodhpur airport is designed to handle increased passenger traffic and provide modern amenities. The facility features improved check-in areas, security checkpoints, and passenger lounges, enhancing the overall travel experience.
Impact on regional development
The expansion of the UDAN scheme is expected to boost tourism, trade, and economic growth in smaller cities and towns. By connecting more remote areas, the government aims to promote balanced regional development and create new opportunities for local businesses.
