Ian McKellen is currently preparing to reprise his role as Magneto in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, set for release in December this year. During a recent appearance, the veteran actor shared a hilarious detail about filming the movie. McKellen revealed that he was quite open about his dislike for US President Donald Trump while working on the Avengers set.
Ian McKellen Talks About His Dislike for the US President
According to The Guardian, while attending the Cinema in Piazza film festival in Rome, McKellen shared insights about filming Avengers: Doomsday. He recounted an instance where he expressed his disdain for the US president quite loudly. The Russo Brothers had instructed him to look angrier and fiercer during a shoot. To achieve the desired effect, McKellen used his own tactic. He shared, “[They told me to] make it look as if you hate what you’re destroying. So I stood there and I shouted: ‘Mar-a-Lago!’”
This became a hilarious jab at the President of the United States. Mar-a-Lago is the name of a residential property owned by Donald Trump since 1985, located in Palm Beach, Florida. The property is frequently visited by Trump and is known as one of his preferred spaces. This is not the first time McKellen has taken a dig at Donald Trump.
Ian McKellen Calls Out US President Donald Trump
Over the years, the Lord of the Rings actor has repeatedly called out the US president. In 2017, during Trump's first presidential run, his administration rolled back the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order and did not acknowledge Pride Month. Many criticized the move, noting that queer employees would face major discrimination without legal protection. In a Variety interview that same year, McKellen stated, “It’s appalling and quite unnecessary and very un-American. The gay rights movement began in America. It began in San Francisco, it began in Stonewall, the city where Donald Trump was born and thrived.” He further quipped, “He’s a very bad communicator, at least to me. Get more straightforward, Donald. And then we can take you seriously.”
