Imran Khan Speaks Candidly on Mental Health and Personal Healing
Bollywood actor Imran Khan, who recently made a cameo appearance in 'Happy Patel' after an 11-year hiatus, has completed shooting for his comeback film 'Adhoore Hum Adhoore Tum' co-starring Bhumi Pednekar and directed by Danish Aslam. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, Khan opened up about his divorce from Avantika Malik and his mental health journey, aiming to help others facing similar challenges.
Recognizing the Disconnect: A Personal Awakening
Imran Khan emphasized that he never felt hindered in discussing mental health, despite societal stigma prevalent 8-10 years ago. "I didn't have that so there was no hurdle to overcome," he stated. His realization stemmed from a personal sense of unease. "I'm not feeling good' that I was able to define it and pinpoint it as 'I don't feel like I am the version of myself which I see in my head'," he explained.
He described a stark contrast between his self-perception and reality. "My self-image was, I'm a really chill guy. But I realised that I whatever I think of myself, I'm not actually that guy," Khan revealed. He noted that his interactions were driven by fear and anxiety, contrary to his easygoing persona.
Divorce as a Turning Point, Not a Trigger
Khan clarified widespread rumors, asserting that his divorce was not the cause of his mental health issues but rather a pivotal moment in his recovery. "The truth is far from it. I was infact in the worst years of it during the last couple of years of my marriage," he said. He described the marriage as unhealthy, starting at a young age without understanding healthy dynamics.
"It is my making the choice to end my marriage that was the turning point in my personal mental health journey that allowed me to actually heal and get better," Khan emphasized. He attributed the separation to a lack of sync and mutual support, not blame.
Advocating for Mental Health Awareness
The actor stressed the importance of treating mental health with the same priority as physical health. "Everyone is grappling with issues of mental health because it is as much a part of your body as physical health," he said. He compared it to lifestyle changes for physical ailments, noting his own "mental health scare" prompted conscious engagement.
Khan highlighted societal discomfort around mental wellness, urging more open conversations. "You have to look after your mind in just as much of the same way," he advised, calling for equal emphasis on psychological well-being.
