At first, we didn't understand what it was, but then it became uncontrollable. It started making him extremely uncomfortable," she revealed. The situation grew so distressing that Jesse altered his clothing choices to conceal the growing tumor from others.
As an elder sister attending the same school, Jamie felt an overwhelming protective instinct. "I felt like I needed to shield him constantly. Being in the same institution, I was always very protective about him," she shared, highlighting the emotional weight she carried during those uncertain early days.
A Complicated Surgical Journey and Spiritual Awakening
The diagnosis soon led to discussions about a complex surgical procedure that would irrevocably change the Lever family's life. "We had to go into surgery, and it was very difficult and complicated. During that phase, our life transformed completely," Jamie explained. While the family had always maintained religious beliefs, this crisis deepened their spirituality significantly. "Things became very spiritual and real for us after this incident," she added.
The medical journey proved arduous, involving two separate surgeries. "We had one surgery in Mumbai which failed. Then we had another surgery in America, which was a very long procedure. So he went through two surgeries—it was a two-year process," Jamie disclosed, outlining the extended timeline of their ordeal.
Family Priorities Reexamined
This traumatic experience forced the family to reevaluate their values fundamentally. "It suddenly taught us that money and fame will fade away. What truly matters is family, faith, and being there for each other," Jamie reflected. During Jesse's treatment, the family united more tightly than ever before. "We came together as a family, prayed extensively, and completely surrendered our lives to God," she stated.
Witnessing her parents navigate this crisis was particularly painful for Jamie. "I saw my parents go through a very tough time caring for their son. Jesse was a very pampered child. To see him undergo surgery and recovery was heartbreaking," she admitted. However, she expressed immense pride in her brother's resilience today. "We are very proud of the person he has become. He is extremely strong. If you see him now, you would never guess he endured something like that."
Divine Intervention and a Father's Prayer
After the initial surgical failure in Mumbai, the family intensified their spiritual practices. "We started praying a lot. As a family, we would constantly pray. People would come to our house and pray with us," Jamie recounted. When her parents took Jesse to America for the second surgery, those remaining in India maintained a continuous prayer vigil.
Jamie shared a particularly poignant moment involving her father. "My dad went down on his knees and asked God if he should let his son go through the second surgery. At that moment, he felt as if he heard God's voice telling him, 'Go for it.'" This spiritual reassurance provided crucial strength for the difficult decision ahead.
Interestingly, the trip to the United States wasn't originally planned for medical treatment. "We had gone to the US for a summer holiday. My parents were just trying to fulfil every wish Jesse had because he was unwell," Jamie explained. A seemingly chance encounter in a church proved pivotal. "A priest noticed him and asked what had happened. When we told him about the tumor, he gave us the name of a hospital and said, 'God is going to heal him.' It felt like a divine sign, so we immediately followed up. The surgery happened there, and he came out fine."
Lasting Lifestyle Changes and Renewed Faith
The entire experience profoundly altered the family's perspective on fame and lifestyle. "After that, we decided we would never return to the lifestyle where fame got into our heads," Jamie affirmed. She acknowledged a previous challenging period when her father struggled with alcoholism and frequent absences from home. "It was a traumatic time for us. But that phase ultimately brought us closer as a family. Today, fame and money don't affect us the way they once did."
Both siblings now maintain a strong connection to their faith through musical participation at church. "Now we go to church every Sunday. Whenever I'm not shooting or performing, I sing in church. My brother plays the drums, and I sing. We absolutely love doing it," Jamie concluded, illustrating how their spiritual practice has become a joyful, integral part of their lives post-recovery.
