Kangana Ranaut's Candid Revelation About Salman Khan's Early Recognition
Long before she became a four-time National Award winner and Padma Shri recipient, Kangana Ranaut was a teenage hopeful navigating Mumbai's competitive film industry. In a recent interview with ANI, the acclaimed actress and filmmaker opened up about a pivotal moment that changed her perspective early in her career journey.
The Fateful Meeting That Changed Everything
When Kangana Ranaut was just 16 or 17 years old, she found herself in a room with Salman Khan through a mutual contact. At that time, she hadn't even signed her debut film 'Gangster' and was essentially unknown in the industry. What happened next would become a defining memory in her career trajectory.
"He looked at me and immediately said, 'she is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's heroine,'" Kangana recalled about Salman Khan's reaction. "He then suggested that I should go and meet Sanjay Bhansali personally." The young actress described this unexpected endorsement as "a very big compliment" coming from an established star like Salman Khan.
The Immediate Follow-Up with Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Acting on Salman Khan's advice, Kangana visited Sanjay Leela Bhansali's residence the very same day, portfolio in hand. She was accompanied by Bhansali's mother during this meeting. "I told him, 'Salman sir has sent me,'" she explained about her introduction.
Bhansali carefully examined her portfolio, studying her features with particular attention. "He observed that I looked different in every photograph," Kangana remembered. "He specifically noted, 'If we straighten your hair, you look different. If you put a wig, you look different. What is your face really like?'"
The Missed Opportunity That Shaped Her Path
Despite the promising meeting, Bhansali did not sign Kangana at that time. Reflecting on this moment, she shared: "He didn't obviously sign me... He actually meant that maybe if you make it, you'll know." The opportunity she desperately needed didn't materialize when she needed it most.
Years later, whenever they crossed paths, Bhansali would express regret about this decision. "Now whenever Sanjay sir met me, he always remembered that and said, 'I wish I had listened to Salman,'" Kangana revealed about their subsequent interactions.
Later Collaborations and Professional Choices
After Kangana achieved significant success with films like 'Queen' and 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns,' Bhansali approached her for a song in 'Ram Leela.' However, this potential collaboration didn't materialize either. "He said I should do this song, but I responded that I didn't want to do item numbers at that stage," she explained. "He kind of didn't like that response." The track eventually went to Priyanka Chopra instead.
How Early Setbacks Forged Her Resilience
Kangana believes these early rejections and near-misses ultimately strengthened her career foundation. "I always say, it's good when you get something, but if you don't get it, it's actually better," she philosophized. "You learn how to make things work even without that particular opportunity."
According to the actress, not receiving quick validation pushed her to develop multiple dimensions as a performer and creator. "These experiences forced me to grow not just as an actor, but as a writer and filmmaker too," she emphasized.
From Teenage Hopeful to Acclaimed Filmmaker
Today, Kangana Ranaut stands as one of Bollywood's most decorated artists with four National Awards and the Padma Shri honor. Her most recent project 'Emergency,' in which she both directed and portrayed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has generated mixed reviews but demonstrates her continued evolution as a filmmaker willing to take creative risks.
This journey from a teenage newcomer receiving unexpected validation from Salman Khan to becoming an industry powerhouse illustrates how early recognition, even when not immediately followed by opportunities, can plant seeds for future success. Kangana's story highlights the unpredictable nature of Bollywood careers and how perseverance through initial setbacks can ultimately lead to remarkable achievements.
