Anurag Kashyap's Noir Drama 'Kennedy' Makes Digital Premiere After Festival Run

Following a successful journey through international film festivals spanning over a year, acclaimed director Anurag Kashyap's atmospheric neo-noir crime thriller 'Kennedy' has finally premiered on digital platforms on February 20. The film, starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone in pivotal roles, initially garnered significant attention at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

Subsequently, 'Kennedy' received an overwhelmingly positive reception during its screening at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, held at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. The event witnessed a packed auditorium where audiences responded with enthusiastic applause and appreciation for the filmmaker's vision.

The Mystery Behind Vijay Sethupathi's Special Thanks Credit

Long before the film's official release, Anurag Kashyap had subtly indicated that popular Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi would receive acknowledgment in the credits. The director has now clarified this intriguing detail, explaining that Sethupathi played a crucial behind-the-scenes role during the post-production phase of the film.

"Vijay made some edit suggestions into the film," Kashyap revealed during a recent interview, openly crediting the actor's creative input that helped shape the final cut of the cinematic project. This collaborative effort highlights the cross-industry creative exchanges that often enrich filmmaking processes.

Javed Akhtar's Credit: Acknowledgment for Deleted Dialogue

Legendary writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar also appears in the 'Special Thanks' section of the credits, though not for material that ultimately remained in the film. Kashyap explained this decision stems from an earlier version of the film that included dialogue written by Akhtar.

"Earlier, we had used a dialogue from Javed Saab. But later, it got edited," the filmmaker stated. Despite the removal of this particular line during the editing process, Kashyap chose to retain the acknowledgment out of genuine respect for Akhtar's contribution and creative legacy within Indian cinema.

How Vijay Sethupathi Influenced Kashyap's Career Decisions

During an event hosted by The Hindu in May 2025, Anurag Kashyap shared another fascinating anecdote that demonstrates Sethupathi's significant impact on his professional trajectory. The director revealed that after his work on 'Imaikkaa Nodigal', he had consistently declined numerous offers from the South Indian film industry.

However, frequent meetings and creative discussions with Vijay Sethupathi during the post-production phase of 'Kennedy' gradually changed his perspective. Recalling this turning point, Kashyap described how Sethupathi passionately pitched a script to him, saying "He said there's this amazing story, and they've been trying to reach you."

Initially hesitant, Kashyap explained "I said no first. Then he helped me find something in 'Kennedy'. He has a 'Thank You' card in 'Kennedy'. Then I couldn't say no to him." The filmmaker added with laughter that personal circumstances also influenced his decision, mentioning his daughter's upcoming wedding and financial considerations.

"I said, 'Listen, I have to get my daughter married next year, and I don't think I can afford it.' Then Vijay Sethupathi said, 'We'll help you.' And 'Maharaja' happened," Kashyap revealed, referring to his subsequent collaboration with the Tamil film industry.
