Anurag Kashyap Praises 'Subedaar', Calls for Theatrical Release Experience
Kashyap: 'Subedaar' Should Have Been a Theatrical Release

Anurag Kashyap Advocates for Theatrical Release of 'Subedaar' After OTT Viewing

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has publicly expressed his strong admiration for the film 'Subedaar', starring veteran actor Anil Kapoor. After watching the movie on the OTT platform Prime Video, Kashyap shared a comprehensive and detailed review on his social media channels, highlighting both the film's strengths and his personal viewing experience.

Kashyap's Detailed Social Media Review

In his Instagram post, Kashyap emphasized that 'Subedaar' was clearly designed for theatrical viewing. He wrote, "SUBEDAAR on @primevideoin should have been a theatrical. Would have loved to experience it in cinemas; it's clearly shot on anamorphic for the big screen, designed for the big screen." The director praised director Suresh Triveni for creating an immersive world of Bundelkhand and Chambal, complete with its entrenched patriarchy and entitlement.

Kashyap elaborated on the film's setting, noting, "Where women are as patriarchal as men and those who aren't, they fight like a man in these male-dominated hinterlands of the beehad that once gave rise to Phoolan Devi. The world has not changed since, in fact, it has gotten worse. And in that world comes our SUBEDAAR." He drew parallels to other cinematic works from the region, mentioning that this world also gave birth to characters like Paan Singh Tomar.

Praise for Performances and Technical Aspects

Alongside his critique of the release platform, Kashyap applauded the film's technical execution and cast performances. He specifically highlighted Anil Kapoor's portrayal, writing, "@anilskapoor of Meri Jung and Tezaab (Munna Zinda hai), carries the simmering fire in him through the film." The supporting cast also received commendation:

  • Faisal Malik was described as "super"
  • Mona Singh was praised with "what can @monajsingh not do"
  • Aditya Rawal's villainous role was noted for making viewers "want to hate him"
  • Radhikka Madan was highlighted as "fiery and vulnerable" with Kashyap expressing desire to see more of her work

Kashyap also appreciated the action design by Saurabh Shukla, mentioning it wasn't on his 2026 calendar but he enjoyed it thoroughly.

Visual Storytelling and Minimalistic Approach

In the concluding section of his review, Kashyap focused on the film's visual elements and storytelling approach. He wrote, "Beautifully photographed landscape, fantastic highway chase, realistic action. At the time when everyone is following the (over the top) action trope, the minimalism here really gets you in."

The filmmaker also praised an actor named Ranveer, calling his performance "fantastic," and declared 'Subedaar' as his type of commercial film. He encouraged others to watch it, stating, "Congratulations to all involved. Give it a shot."

About 'Subedaar'

'Subedaar' features Anil Kapoor in the lead role as Arjun, an ex-army man navigating a complex and harsh social environment. The film is directed by Suresh Triveni and stars Radhikka Madan as Arjun's daughter. The supporting cast includes Saurabh Shukla, Aditya Rawal, Khushbu Sundar, Faisal Malik, and Mona Singh in important roles.

Kashyap's review has sparked conversation about the ongoing debate between theatrical releases versus OTT premieres, particularly for films with cinematic scale and visual ambition. His detailed analysis provides insight into how filmmaking techniques specifically designed for large screens can lose some impact when viewed on smaller home devices.
