The 1993 Hindi-language action crime film 'Khalnayak', written, directed, and produced by Subhash Ghai, remains a landmark in Indian cinema. Starring Sanjay Dutt in the lead role, alongside Madhuri Dixit, Anupam Kher, Rakhee Gulzar, and Jackie Shroff, the film overcame significant hurdles to become a major success.

Challenges and Triumph

Upon its release, 'Khalnayak' faced strong public outrage and backlash. Many doubted whether it would ever hit theatres. However, the film eventually released and broke several box office records in India and overseas, cementing its place in Hindi cinema history.

Subhash Ghai Reflects on 30 Years

Marking 30 years since its release, filmmaker Subhash Ghai revisited the film's journey in an old interview with Hindustan Times. He shared insights into the making, explaining how he carefully shaped Sanjay Dutt's character. Ghai enacted every scene for the actor, aiming for the character to feel unpredictable at all times. The audience should never know whether he would show love or turn violent. According to Ghai, Sanjay delivered exactly what was expected.

Sanjay Dutt's Improvisation That Shocked Everyone

During filming, one moment stood out and stunned the entire crew. In a key scene, Sanjay Dutt suddenly grabbed a co-actor by the neck. This action was not planned in advance. As he tightened his grip, concern spread across the set. Some crew members suggested stopping the shoot immediately, as the moment felt intense and unexpected. Many believed something had gone wrong. The tension on set was real and visible.

Director Chose to Keep Rolling

However, Subhash Ghai decided to continue filming. He later explained the scene in detail. In the sequence, Sanjay's character meets a man in jail. He speaks to him kindly at first, but during a hug, the character suddenly strangles him. Since most of the crew did not know about this change, they were genuinely shocked. Ghai recalled that even his assistant asked to cut the shot, believing Sanjay had made a mistake. The director, however, trusted the moment. He felt the improvisation added authenticity. The scene was completed as it happened, and in the end, everyone appreciated the result.

Another improvisation came during the iconic song 'Choli Ke Peeche'. At the last moment, Sanjay Dutt was asked to wear an eye mask. In the same interview, Subhash Ghai revealed why he chose Sanjay for the role: because of his eyes. According to Ghai, they showed innocence and childlike qualities, yet also reflected anger and intensity. This balance made him perfect for the role.

The Story and Legacy

'Khalnayak's story follows two police officers, Ram and Ganga, tasked with capturing an escaped criminal named Ballu. The film continues to hold a strong place in Hindi cinema history. Meanwhile, Sanjay Dutt is set for 'Khalnayak Returns', and recently the makers shared the first look teaser for the upcoming movie.
