Kolkata Police Makes Arrests in Actress Mimi Chakraborty Harassment Case

In a significant development, the Kolkata Police on Thursday arrested event organizer Tanay Shastri and two of his associates following a complaint filed by actress and former Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty. The arrests came after a scuffle at Shastri's residence when he allegedly tried to obstruct the police team from conducting their investigation.

Incident Details and Conflicting Narratives

The controversy stems from an event that took place on Sunday night in the Nayagopalganj area of Bongaon, located in North 24 Parganas district. According to Chakraborty, who was performing at the event, she faced harassment on stage from the organizer.

"I was performing. Suddenly, the event organiser, Tanay Shastri, came onto the stage and stopped me. He told me to leave. Without arguing, I left without completing the entire performance. His behaviour was very arrogant," the actress stated in her complaint.

Chakraborty further alleged that this treatment was retaliation for her refusal to be a guest at Shastri's house, unlike other artistes who attended. Following the incident, she filed a written complaint with the local police station via email on Monday.

Organizer's Defense and Police Action

Shastri has vehemently denied all allegations, calling them "completely baseless and false." He presented a different version of events, claiming Chakraborty arrived significantly later than her scheduled time.

"I am not at fault. Mimi arrived very late. We had to finish the event on time. That's what we did. We did not treat Mimi badly in any way," Shastri asserted. According to his account, Chakraborty's scheduled arrival was 10:30 PM, but she arrived around 11:45 PM, nearly an hour and a half late. Despite this, he claims she was given due respect and escorted onto the stage.

The situation escalated when police attempted to investigate the matter at Shastri's residence. Officials reported that Shastri and his associates tried to prevent them from discharging their duties, leading to a scuffle and subsequent arrests.

Background and Current Status

Mimi Chakraborty, who is currently busy promoting her recently released film "Bhanupriya Bhuter Hotel," has not issued any official statement regarding the latest developments in the case. The actress served as a Member of Parliament from Jadavpur constituency from 2019 to 2024.

The incident has created tension in the area since Monday, with conflicting narratives emerging from both parties involved. While Chakraborty maintains she was harassed and treated unjustly, Shastri insists the allegations are fabricated and that he was merely managing event logistics.

Police officials confirmed the arrests but declined to provide further details about the ongoing investigation. The case highlights the challenges faced by public figures during public appearances and the importance of proper event management protocols.
