Konkona Sen Sharma on Gender Bias: Big Films Favor Male Heroes

Konkona Sen Sharma, one of the most versatile actresses in the Indian film industry, has delivered several acclaimed performances, including her recent role in Anurag Basu's 'Metro... In Dino'. Known for selecting roles that showcase her range and avoid typecasting, she has consistently carved a unique niche for herself.

After 25 years in the industry, the actress revealed that it still hasn't become easier for women to secure substantial roles in big-budget films. Reflecting on industry changes over the past quarter-century, Konkona said in an interview with News18, 'In some ways, I think, to a certain extent, perhaps in smaller-budget films or OTT films, to a certain extent, yes. But if you follow the money (laughs), then you will see that larger films will inevitably have larger-than-life male heroes.' She emphasized that this trend is not new but has persisted for many years. 'I don't think this is necessarily a problem of today, but I think it's kind of been like this for many, many years. Every year, you will find a handful of interesting films, films that don't follow trends or a certain formula, but those kinds of films are few and far between.'

OTT Platforms Expanding Opportunities for Women

The actress credited streaming platforms and short films for opening up more substantial roles for female actors. 'To a certain extent, with streamers nowadays, there are some projects in which you will have female cops and things like that, or you will have women in negative or complex roles. But you will see mostly older women in such roles, by and large, except for some exceptions,' she added.
