Lucknow Mourns the Loss of Asha Bhosle, the Iconic Voice Behind Umrao Jaan
The city of Lucknow is in mourning following the passing of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose soulful renditions in the classic film Umrao Jaan have immortalized both the movie and the city it romanticized. Her mellifluous notes in songs like 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai' and 'In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke' struck a direct chord with fans, earning her widespread acclaim and a permanent place in the hearts of music lovers.
A Timeless Connection to Lucknow and Cinema
Asha Bhosle's association with Umrao Jaan was profound. Initially slated to sing only one song for the 1981 classic, she ended up lending her voice to the entire soundtrack, a feat that won her first National Award for Best Female Playback Singer. In a September 2024 interview with TOI, she recalled this unexpected turn of events, highlighting her deep involvement in the project.
The film's connection to Lucknow was further celebrated last June when a restored 4K version was re-released in Mumbai. At this event, the nonagenarian singer made a memorable appearance, crooning 'Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Doston' amid loud cheers from the audience, including actor Rekha, who held her warmly during the performance. Despite some struggle, her presence underscored the enduring legacy of her work.
Immortal Contributions and Personal Tributes
Mumtaz Ali Khan, convener of the Rumi Foundation established by filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, remarked, "Ashaji's Umrao Jaan is immortal. When the restored 4K version was re-released across India last year, we all witnessed her aura on the stage." This sentiment echoes the broader impact of her contributions to Indian music.
Actor-director and playwright Salim Arif praised Asha Bhosle's versatility and accessibility. "The most admiring thing about ever-smiling Ashaji was that she kept reinventing herself. That is the reason why her collection of songs is so versatile, from collaborations with OP Nayyar and RD Burman to ghazals and cabaret numbers like 'Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja'," he said. Arif also shared personal anecdotes, noting her support for younger artists. In 2004, she recorded a song written by Gulzar for his film Sabab, and she allowed him to use her track 'Rishte Bante Hain' from the 1987 album Dil Padosi Hai in his play Kachche Lamhe.
Broader Legacy and International Recognition
Beyond Umrao Jaan, Asha Bhosle's connection to Lucknow extended to other songs, such as 'Panwaran Hoon Main Lucknow Ki' from the 1972 film Baazigar, starring Vijayalalithaa. This classic '70s track, composed by Sapan-Jagmohan, remains a beloved piece of her extensive repertoire.
The restored 4K version of Umrao Jaan has also gained international acclaim, being re-released in Saudi Arabia last year as part of the "Treasures" section, which highlights restored masterpieces from around the world. This global recognition underscores the film's status as a cinematic treasure and Asha Bhosle's role in its enduring appeal.
As Lucknow and the world reflect on her passing, Asha Bhosle's legacy as a versatile, affable, and groundbreaking singer continues to inspire. Her ability to connect with audiences through timeless music ensures that her voice will resonate for generations to come.
