Madras High Court Denies Actor Vishal's Request for Extension to Deposit Rs 10 Crore
The Madras High Court has firmly dismissed an application filed by popular actor Vishal, who sought an extension of time to deposit a substantial sum of Rs 10 crore as previously mandated by the court. Additionally, the court granted liberty to Lyca Productions to move an execution petition to implement the order of the single judge, ensuring that the production company can pursue legal avenues to recover the dues. Origins of the Loan Dispute
The roots of this legal battle trace back to June 5, when a single judge of the Madras High Court issued the directive for Vishal to pay Rs 21.29 crore with 30% interest to Lyca Productions. This order came in response to a plea filed by the production company against Vishal for non-payment of a loan. According to court documents and statements from Lyca, the actor initially obtained the loan from Gopuram Films' Anbu Chezhian in 2019.
As part of the loan agreement, a lien was created on the rights, titles, and interests of all future films produced by Vishal, serving as security for the borrowed amount. Subsequently, through a separate and binding agreement, Lyca Productions agreed to settle this loan to Gopuram Films on behalf of Vishal. It was mutually agreed that Vishal would then repay the loan directly to Lyca Productions, formalizing the financial arrangement between the actor and the production house.
Escalation to Legal Proceedings
The dispute escalated when Vishal failed to make the required payments as per the agreement with Lyca Productions. Compounding the issue, the actor attempted to alienate the rights of his films to third parties, which directly contravened the lien established in favour of Lyca. This action prompted Lyca Productions to file a suit in the Madras High Court, seeking legal recourse to protect its financial interests and enforce the repayment terms.
