Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has partnered with India Post to introduce doorstep gas meter reading services across Mumbai. The initiative, announced on 8 July 2026, aims to enhance convenience and accuracy for consumers by eliminating the need for estimated bills.
How the service works
Under the partnership, postal staff will visit consumer premises to manually read gas meters. Each reading will be verified through a photograph of the meter display, ensuring transparency. The data is transmitted directly to MGL's systems via an Application Programming Interface (API), enabling end-to-end traceability and real-time updates.
MGL stated that the service will initially cover select areas and gradually expand to all of Mumbai. Consumers will receive accurate bills based on actual consumption rather than estimates, reducing disputes and improving customer satisfaction.
Benefits for consumers and partners
The collaboration leverages India Post's extensive network of post offices and field staff, allowing MGL to reach households efficiently without deploying additional personnel. For India Post, it provides a new revenue stream and strengthens its role in last-mile service delivery.
According to MGL officials, the initiative is part of a broader digital transformation strategy. The API integration ensures that meter readings are recorded securely and can be audited if needed. Customers will also be able to track their consumption patterns through MGL's online portal.
Implementation and future plans
The doorstep reading service is expected to cover over 1 million households in Mumbai within the first year. MGL plans to extend the service to other cities in its operational area, including Thane and Navi Mumbai, based on the pilot's success.
MGL emphasized that the partnership aligns with the government's Digital India initiative, promoting cashless and paperless transactions. Consumers will receive bills via email or SMS, reducing paper usage.
