A building collapse in Delhi claimed one life, while a separate incident in Pune left several individuals feared trapped under debris, according to officials. The incidents occurred on the same day, highlighting structural safety concerns in urban areas.
Delhi Building Collapse
In Delhi, a three-story building collapsed in the Burari area on Thursday morning. One person was confirmed dead, and at least two others were injured, rescue officials said. The building, which housed several families, was reportedly under renovation at the time of the collapse. Local residents alerted authorities, and teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Fire Service rushed to the spot.
According to a senior Delhi Fire Service officer, the rescue operation involved removing debris carefully to locate any trapped individuals. "We have rescued two injured persons so far, and efforts are ongoing to ensure no one else is trapped under the rubble," the officer said. The deceased was identified as a 45-year-old man. The cause of the collapse is under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting weak structural integrity due to illegal modifications.
Pune Building Collapse
In Pune, a four-story building collapsed in the Kondhwa area, with several people feared trapped. The building, which was under construction, gave way around midday, sending construction workers and nearby residents into panic. Local police and fire brigade teams arrived promptly, and rescue operations were launched with the help of sniffer dogs and cutting equipment.
"We have rescued five people so far, but we fear at least eight to ten workers may still be trapped under the debris," a Pune Municipal Corporation official stated. The building was being constructed without proper approvals, according to initial inquiries. The collapse also damaged an adjacent structure, leading to the evacuation of nearby homes as a precautionary measure.
Rescue and Investigation
Both incidents prompted a coordinated response from disaster management agencies. In Delhi, NDRF teams used concrete cutters and hydraulic jacks to clear the rubble. In Pune, the rescue operation was complicated by the unstable condition of the remaining structure. Authorities have ordered a structural audit of all under-construction buildings in the area.
Legal action has been initiated against the builders in both cases. In Delhi, a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered. In Pune, the builder is absconding, and a manhunt has been launched. The incidents have reignited debates about building safety regulations and enforcement in Indian cities.
According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, building collapses account for a significant number of accidental deaths in India each year, often due to substandard materials and lack of adherence to building codes. The Delhi and Pune incidents serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for stricter enforcement.
