Conviction in Canada, but Family Seeks Justice for Alleged Abetment
The family of Balwinder Kaur, a woman from Ludhiana who was murdered in Canada in March 2024, has urged the central and state governments to take action against the relatives of her convicted husband, Jagpreet Singh. They allege that Jagpreet's mother and other family members provoked him to commit the crime and must be booked.
Balwinder Kaur, a resident of Mallah village in Ludhiana, was found dead at Abbotsford, Canada, on March 15, 2024, just four days after she left India. Jagpreet Singh was convicted of second degree murder for her death.
Victim's Uncle Alleges Family Conspiracy
Kamikar Singh, the victim's uncle, stated, "Jagpreet's mother and other family members, who prompted him to commit the crime, must be booked." He claimed that the accused had shown the crime scene on a video call to his mother, Paramjit Kaur, who lives on Pakhowal Road in Ludhiana.
Kamikar revealed that Balwinder married Jagpreet over 20 years ago, and the couple had two children: a daughter, Harnoorpreet Kaur, and a son, Gurnoor. The family had sent Harnoorpreet to Canada in 2020 on a study visa, where she developed health issues and underwent surgery. Balwinder then traveled to Canada to help with her post-operative care.
Alleged Threats Over Canada Invitation
The family alleged that Jagpreet Singh and his mother threatened them with dire consequences if Balwinder did not force her daughter to invite them to Canada. "Though Jagpreet had threatened to kill my niece after reaching Canada, I did not take it seriously. I asked her (Balwinder Kaur) to impress upon Harnoorpreet to invite her father too," said Kamikar Singh.
Kamikar expressed satisfaction with the justice system in Canada but lamented that authorities in India had not taken any concrete action against the convict's family members. He reiterated the demand for their prosecution, emphasizing that they played a role in provoking the murder.
