Tamil Actor Mahendran Condemns Censorship of Vijay's Film

Tamil actor Mahendran has strongly criticized the eleventh-hour decision to stall the release of Vijay's film 'Jana Nayagan'. He calls the move unjust and warns it sets a dangerous precedent for Indian cinema.

Mahendran Defends Freedom of Expression

Speaking to India Today, Mahendran emphasized India's rich tradition of free speech and liberties. He argues artists should not face restrictions without solid reasons.

"Stopping a film at the final stage of release sends a wrong message to artists," Mahendran stated. He believes this action undermines constitutional rights that allow creators to express their artistic vision freely.

Mahendran highlighted that freedom of expression forms the backbone of the country. He finds the entire incident concerning and extremely wrong.

"The country thrives on freedom of expression, and that is why this country is so beautiful," he said. Mahendran noted cinema naturally presents diverse opinions and perspectives.

He questioned why 'Jana Nayagan' is being targeted. Many films with objectionable content received clearance in the past. Mahendran suggests the film faces scrutiny merely because Vijay is a major star with immense influence.

Censor Delay Called an Avoidable Error

Mahendran denounced the censor board's decision as a fair blunder. The film's review committee had already granted majority approval, leading to a U/A certification.

He dismissed allegations that the film would negatively influence society. Mahendran declared these claims untrue, noting only the council had viewed the film.

"Vijay would never partake in a project that could distort societal beliefs or misguide the public," he asserted confidently.

Producers Aim for Republic Day Release

Mahendran emphasized the collaborative effort behind 'Jana Nayagan'. The film involved several experienced assistant directors, editors, and writers.

He argued any issues would have been caught before the final print. Mahendran suggested practical solutions like applying blurs to specific scenes instead of halting the entire release.

The producers still hope for a Republic Day release. They await a Madras High Court hearing regarding the suspension of the censor certificate.
