Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu and acclaimed director SS Rajamouli are currently filming a pivotal song sequence for their upcoming action-adventure film, 'Varanasi.' According to recent reports, the production team is working diligently to complete the entire shoot by August 2026.
Song Sequence Filming Underway
As per Telugu Chitraalu, the song is being shot on a massive set constructed in Katedan, Hyderabad. Mahesh Babu has reportedly been filming there for the past several days. The song is not merely a dance number but is described as an integral part of the narrative that advances the plot. Given that 'Varanasi' is being crafted as a global adventure thriller, every major sequence is expected to serve a purpose within the storyline.
Priyanka Chopra's Dance Request
Earlier in February, Priyanka Chopra Jonas revealed in a conversation with Variety that she had requested a dance sequence before signing the film. She told Rajamouli, 'Listen, I'm coming back to Indian movies. I have to do a dance song. Like you have to make me dance.' She added, 'I know I'm gonna be doing it, but we haven't shot it yet. OK, that's one of the last things, which I'm really looking forward to. But we already did one where the choreography was crazy. It's so intricate.' Priyanka joined the 'Varanasi' team earlier this month.
Shoot Completion Timeline
Reports indicate that the makers plan to wrap up all shooting by the end of August 2026. The team has already completed several major schedules and is now concentrating on key portions of the film. It is important to note that the production team has not officially confirmed these updates. Additionally, the crew recently completed an underwater sequence, a decision reportedly made due to water scarcity in Hyderabad. This sequence is expected to be one of the film's visually stunning moments.
About 'Varanasi'
In 'Varanasi', Mahesh Babu portrays Rudra, a rugged adventurer and time traveller. He is also expected to appear as Lord Rama in a special episode. Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays Mandakini, while Prithviraj Sukumaran is reported to be the main antagonist, Kumbha. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
