The Storied Legacy of Malayalam Cinema at the National Film Awards
Malayalam cinema has consistently produced some of India's finest performers, with numerous actors from the industry receiving prestigious honors at the National Film Awards over the decades. This recognition began with the legendary P. J. Antony, who became the first Malayalam actor to win the Best Actor award in 1974 for his role in 'Nirmalyam'. His groundbreaking achievement set a high standard for future generations.
Early Pioneers and Their Impact
Following Antony, Bharath Gopi won the Best Actor award in 1977 for 'Kodiyettam', delivering a nuanced performance in a film now considered a classic. Late actor Balan K. Nair, known for his intense portrayals, earned recognition for 'Oppol', while Premji was honored for 'Piravi'. These early winners helped establish Malayalam cinema's reputation for depth and artistic excellence on the national stage.
Mammootty and Mohanlal: Leading the Era
Among the most prominent names, Mammootty stands out with three Best Actor National Awards. He first won in 1989 for 'Mathilukal' and 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha', then again in 1993 for 'Ponthan Mada' and 'Vidheyan', and later in 1998 for 'Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar'. Mohanlal also made a significant mark, winning Best Actor for 'Bharatham' and 'Vanaprastham'. Their contributions have solidified Malayalam cinema's influence in Indian film.
Modern Carriers of the Legacy
Actors like Suraj Venjaramoodu and Salim Kumar have carried forward this legacy, interestingly transitioning from comedy roles to intense performances that surprised audiences. Suraj won for 'Perariyathavar', while Salim Kumar was honored for 'Adaminte Makan Abu'. Reflecting on his journey, Suraj Venjaramoodu shared, "It gives me great joy that I could do a lot of good roles in 2019 in movies that were widely watched and to win this State honour. It’s obviously a huge responsibility. I have always wished for good characters and by putting the effort, I could get to play such roles." He added that after winning the National Award, he received more substantial roles, such as in 'Action Hero Biju', viewing audience response as a personal award.
Controversies and Criticisms
Meanwhile, Prakash Raj stirred debate in 2025 by criticizing the National Film Awards. At a press event, he stated, "I don't mind saying that the National Film Awards are compromised." He expressed satisfaction with his role as a jury chairperson in Kerala, noting that he was invited as an outsider with experience and given autonomy, a contrast he implied does not occur at the national level.
Women Making Their Mark
On the female front, Urvashi recently won Best Supporting Actress at the 71st National Awards for 'Ullozhukku'. Earlier, Surabhi Lakshmi received Best Actress for 'Minnaminungu'. Actresses like Shobana and Archana have also contributed significantly across industries; Shobana was honored for 'Manichitrathazhu' and 'Mitr, My Friend', while Archana won for 'Veedu' and 'Daasi'. These achievements highlight the ongoing contributions of women to Malayalam cinema's award legacy.
The journey of Malayalam actors at the National Film Awards reflects a rich tradition of excellence, from pioneering figures to contemporary stars, amidst evolving industry dynamics and discussions about award integrity.
