Mariah Carey Announces Special Plans for 'Glitter' 25th Anniversary
Singer and actress Mariah Carey has revealed exciting plans to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her 2001 biographical film Glitter, including a potential deluxe reissue of the movie's soundtrack. According to exclusive reports from People magazine, Carey shared these developments during a recent interview with Variety, confirming that preparations are actively underway to celebrate this significant milestone.
Deluxe Soundtrack Reissue in the Works
"There are plans for a deluxe and a reissue, or maybe just one, I don't know. We're getting on top of it. I'm excited about it," Carey told People magazine. The film, which was loosely inspired by Carey's own life story and released on September 21, 2001, initially struggled commercially at the box office, earning approximately USD 5.3 million worldwide. Its unfortunate timing—coming just days after the devastating September 11 terrorist attacks—significantly impacted both the entertainment industry and public sentiment during that period.
From Box Office Flop to Cult Classic
Despite its initial reception, Glitter has experienced a remarkable resurgence in popularity over the years. In 2018, the viral social media campaign #JusticeForGlitter helped propel the film's soundtrack back into the iTunes Top 10 albums chart nearly seventeen years after its original release. Carey herself has undergone a significant shift in perspective regarding the project.
"I used to hate it. I used to be so like, 'Why did I do that?'" Carey admitted, describing the film as a "disastrous flop" that arrived during a particularly challenging phase of her personal life. However, she added, "And then, you know, it became something that I really loved, and it just sort of took on its own thing."
Career Reflections and Upcoming Honors
Earlier this year, Carey discussed her extensive career in a Billboard cover story, ahead of being honored as the 2026 Person of the Year by MusiCares. Despite achieving monumental success—including 19 No. 1 hits and multiple Grammy Awards—Carey maintains a humble perspective about her legendary status.
"Everybody has their own little meanings for what things they say," Carey explained. "But I don't call myself a legend. I'm just still working, still trying hard," she told People magazine. This announcement about the Glitter anniversary celebrations comes as Carey continues to engage with her extensive fanbase and reflect on her impactful career in the entertainment industry.
