Martin Short's Unintentional Slice of Selena Gomez's Wedding Cake
In a hilarious revelation that has left fans amused, veteran actor-comedian Martin Short recently disclosed that he accidentally cut into Selena Gomez's wedding cake, nearly spoiling the special moment. The 75-year-old star shared this comical anecdote during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on January 21, as reported by PEOPLE magazine.
The Scene of the Cake Confusion
The mix-up occurred at the wedding reception of Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco, which took place in Santa Barbara, California, last September. Short described the event as "perfect and beautiful," but humorously noted that the reception night had an unexpected twist. He explained that the venue featured large tents with small lounge areas in the back, where he was seated alongside friends from the hit series Only Murders in the Building, including Steve Martin and Paul Rudd.
"And there was a wedding cake by our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back," Short recounted, eliciting laughter from the audience. With a fork in hand and perhaps after enjoying a cocktail, he thought it would be a nice gesture to offer cake to his friend Steve Martin.
The Moment of Realization and Panic
Short proceeded to cut into the cake, slicing it on one side and then the other, only to be met with screams from his group shouting, "Marty!" It was then that he realized his mistake—this was the actual wedding cake, not a separate one for their section. A photo displayed during the show revealed a significant slice missing from the side of the cake, highlighting the blunder.
"I tried to fix it with a fork," Short admitted, acknowledging the severity of the situation. "This was bad. This was about an hour before it was to be presented." The incident prompted an urgent call to the wedding team, with the chef stepping in to perform what Short jokingly referred to as "surgery" on the cake.
The Aftermath and Secret Keeping
Thanks to the chef's skillful repairs, the cake was restored to its former glory, albeit with a bit of extra work. Short quipped, "It ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake... it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done." In the aftermath, he was adamant about keeping the mishap from Gomez, repeatedly urging his friends, "Guys, we can't let Selena know."
Selena Gomez had announced her wedding last September by sharing a series of pictures on Instagram, celebrating the joyous occasion. This lighthearted story adds a humorous footnote to what was otherwise a flawless and memorable event, showcasing Martin Short's endearing and comical personality.
