21st Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards to Celebrate Indian Theatre in New Delhi
The prestigious Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META), now in its 21st edition, is set to illuminate New Delhi from 19th to 25th March 2026. Instituted by the Mahindra Group and produced by Teamwork Arts, this annual festival brings together the most outstanding theatre productions from across India, showcasing the nation's rich performing arts heritage.
Legendary Amol Palekar to Receive META Lifetime Achievement Award
This year's edition will honor the iconic actor, director, and theatre practitioner Amol Palekar with the coveted META Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes his extraordinary contributions spanning several decades in both Indian theatre and cinema.
Palekar revolutionized Indian stagecraft by democratizing theatre, taking performances to unconventional spaces like parks, terraces, canteens, and garages. His cinematic career marked a significant turning point in Hindi cinema during the 1970s, where he captivated audiences as the relatable "boy-next-door" character, offering a refreshing alternative to larger-than-life heroes.
With three consecutive silver jubilee hits, Palekar achieved instant stardom and later distinguished himself as a director exploring nuanced social and personal themes. His distinctive artistic voice and commitment to storytelling have left an indelible imprint on contemporary Indian performance arts.
