Milind Soman Highlights Global Shift in Content Acceptability
Actor and fitness icon Milind Soman has sparked a conversation about the evolving landscape of global entertainment, stating that the humor and dialogue featured in legendary sitcoms like Seinfeld and Friends would not be acceptable in today's era. According to Soman, this shift is driven by changing audience sensitivities that have transformed content creation worldwide.
Changing Sensitities Reshape Television Content
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Milind Soman elaborated on the noticeable transformation in television and film production. "If you look at television series or movies that are produced today, you can't talk freely," he remarked, highlighting the constraints that modern creators face compared to previous decades.
The actor specifically pointed to iconic American sitcoms as prime examples. "You look at 'Seinfeld', a very famous comedy series, or 'Friends', one of the most popular series ever made—the kind of things they used to say in the series, you cannot say today. Even they can't say it now, in America also," Soman explained, emphasizing that this phenomenon extends beyond Indian borders.
A Worldwide Phenomenon Affecting Freedom of Speech
Milind Soman clarified that this change is not isolated to any single region but represents a global trend. "It has changed all over the world, not just here. Today, there are people who object, 'you can't say things like this', 'this is not funny'. Earlier, people may have been offended, but they didn't say anything. Now they will say it, so you know they are being offended," he observed.
When questioned about whether this shift impacts freedom of speech, Soman maintained that it ultimately boils down to individual choice. "There are still people who say whatever they want and they don't care. And there are people who do care because they can see that others are offended. It's your choice whether you want to say those things or not. You can think of them, but to say them, well that's your choice," he added, presenting a nuanced perspective on personal responsibility in content creation.
Soman's Outspoken Nature and Upcoming Projects
Known for his candid and straightforward personality, Milind Soman has consistently demonstrated his willingness to speak his mind, a trait that has influenced his selection of professional projects as well. The 60-year-old actor is currently preparing for his upcoming venture, Kaattaan, where he will share the screen with South Indian star Vijay Sethupathi.
The series is scheduled to premiere on March 27th, exclusively on the Jio Hotstar platform. This project marks another significant step in Soman's diverse career, which spans acting, modeling, and fitness advocacy.
The broader entertainment industry continues to navigate these evolving audience expectations, with creators worldwide adjusting their content to align with contemporary sensitivities while balancing creative expression.
