Mithun Chakraborty Questions Double Standards in Bollywood Film Releases
The blockbuster film 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', directed by Aditya Dhar, has become a monumental box office success, attracting enormous audiences and generating intense nationwide conversations. This cinematic phenomenon has dominated public discourse, with theaters consistently packed and social media buzzing with reactions.
Controversy Amid Commercial Triumph
Despite its extraordinary commercial performance, Dhurandhar 2 has not been immune to criticism. A segment of viewers has labeled the film as "propaganda," sparking heated debates about its content and messaging. While numerous public figures have previously commented on this controversy, veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty has now entered the fray with a pointed perspective.
Chakraborty Highlights Contrast in Treatment
Chakraborty drew attention to his own unreleased 2025 project, 'The Bengal Files,' emphasizing the stark contrast in how the two films have been handled. He argued that if his film faced obstacles preventing its release, similar objections should logically have been applied to Dhurandhar 2 as well. Notably, he observed that accusations of propaganda only emerged after Dhurandhar 2 had already been released and achieved significant success.
In an interview with IANS, Chakraborty expressed his frustration: "They didn't allow 'The Bengal Files' to be released—what could be bigger than this? If they call Dhurandhar propaganda too, then they should have stopped Dhurandhar as well, right? Dhurandhar was released, and now you say it's propaganda. But 'The Bengal Files' wasn't even allowed to be released. Going against it, the film wasn't permitted to release in Bengal. What could be more sorrowful than this?"
Historical Context and Defense of Dhurandhar
Chakraborty further explained that 'The Bengal Files' is based on the Noakhali riots, which occurred before India's Independence, yet it still could not secure a release. Defending Aditya Dhar's film, he added: "So say whatever you want to say, but Dhurandhar broke all records. So many people must have watched the film, right? People from every community have watched it, praised it, and such business happens only when people watch a film two or three times."
Star-Studded Cast and Industry Impact
Apart from lead actor Ranveer Singh, 'Dhurandhar 2' features a powerful ensemble cast including:
- Arjun Rampal
- Sara Arjun
- Rakesh Bedi
- Sanjay Dutt
- R Madhavan
- Danish Pandor
- Gaurav Gera
This controversy underscores ongoing tensions within Bollywood regarding creative freedom, political narratives, and the selective application of scrutiny. Chakraborty's comments have reignited discussions about fairness and consistency in the film industry's treatment of projects with potentially sensitive themes.
