Mohit Suri Opens Up About 'Saiyaara' Success and Casting Journey

The acclaimed director Mohit Suri's latest cinematic venture, 'Saiyaara,' has received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. The film served as the debut platform for actors Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, propelling them to instant stardom. In a revealing interview with Variety India, Suri delved into the film's remarkable achievements and shared surprising behind-the-scenes details about the casting process.

Initial Doubts About Ahaan Panday's Casting

Suri disclosed that he was initially uncertain about casting Ahaan Panday for the lead role and had actually rejected the young actor multiple times. The director described how producer Aditya Chopra first introduced him to Panday, suggesting a meeting at Chopra's office, which doubled as his creative workspace and personal retreat.

"He comes there, and I didn't find him like Krish Kapoor at all," Suri recalled about his first impression. "I found him to be a sweet, really soft boy. So I told Adi sir, 'He is not the kind of guy.' And we did spend two or three meetings where I actually completely rejected him."

Chopra encouraged Suri to have an honest conversation with Panday about the rejection. The director agreed to dinner with the aspiring actor, and during this meeting, something remarkable happened.

The Turning Point During Dinner

Suri explained that when he finally told Panday he wouldn't be cast in the film, "a veil dropped." The director observed that the actor stopped trying to impress him and began behaving naturally. "I think that's when he stopped pretending to impress me, and we just went out like normal people. And suddenly that night, I saw him come alive," Suri revealed.

By the end of the evening, Suri witnessed a transformation in Panday's demeanor. "Because by the end of the night, I can't talk about the details, but he was standing at the bar. And he was pretty much like Krish Kapoor," the director concluded, referring to the character Panday would eventually portray.

Surprising Family Connection Between Director and Actor

Beyond the professional relationship, Suri shared that he and Ahaan Panday have a deeper personal connection that predates the actor's birth. "My father and his father were surprisingly friends when my father was probably my age, and his dad was probably his age," Suri disclosed.

The director added, "And that's weird, because I remember meeting his dad. He was probably not born even at that time." This unexpected family history created a unique bond between the director and his lead actor during the filmmaking process.

The 2025 Indian language film 'Saiyaara' has emerged as one of Mohit Suri's most successful projects to date. The movie features a compelling narrative about a young woman diagnosed with early-onset memory-related illness who forms an unexpected connection with a struggling musician.
