Mollywood Campus Entertainer 'Derby' Faces Negative Reception from Audiences

Following their collaboration in the successful film 'Prakambanam', actors Sagar Surya and Al Ameen reunited for the Mollywood campus entertainer 'Derby', which premiered in theaters on March 27. However, the film has now opened to overwhelmingly negative reactions from netizens and social media users, marking a disappointing reception for the anticipated project.

Twitter Users Criticize Film's Predictable Narrative and Technical Flaws

'Derby' establishes a campus-based story set within a college environment, following a group of students as they navigate complex dynamics of friendship, rivalry, romantic relationships, and personal ambition. As the narrative unfolds, the plot transitions into a more competitive space where personal egos and campus pride become central themes. Despite this promising setup, Twitter reviews indicate that the performances and character development fail to create a meaningful impact on viewers.

Social media platforms, particularly Twitter, have become flooded with critical reactions from disappointed audience members. One user expressed strong dissatisfaction, writing: "#Derby: An avoidable film. Very poor direction & technical sides too. Stay away from theatres!! 0.5/5". Another viewer commented on the film's lack of originality, stating: "A cliche campus story with predictable storyline and no curious developments. The story revolves through a college and the gang rivalries and college celebrations."

Technical Aspects Come Under Heavy Scrutiny

Multiple viewers have directed criticism toward the film's technical execution, with cinematography, editing, and musical score all receiving negative feedback. One detailed review provided comprehensive analysis: "The movie has the cinematography of someone like Abhinandan Ramanujam, and the work was extremely flat. The fight sequences in the movie lacked euphoria. They wanted to project Adam Sabiq as this hero material, and unfortunately, the editor was fighting for him, and even he couldn't save him. Gopi Sunder delivers yet another forgettable album. The dance choreography in that initial arts day song is horrendously bad. In this movie, there is a part where a bunch of seniors are killing a cat to ruin a certain plan, and they are all wearing a certain costume while doing it. Derby is a collection of such nonsense and some cheesy romantic cliches."

Overall Response Remains Largely Negative Despite Youthful Themes

'Derby' was initially expected to resonate strongly with younger audiences due to its relatable campus setting and contemporary themes. However, early reactions clearly indicate that the film has failed to establish meaningful connections with viewers, resulting in widespread disappointment. The film is directed by Sajil Mampad and features an extensive ensemble cast including Adam Sabiq, Sagar Surya, AL Ameen, and Jasnya Jayadeesh in lead roles.

Supporting actors contributing to the cast include Hari Sivaram, Rish NK, Anu, Jasnya, Franco Francis, Siva Raaj, Praveen, and Johnny Antony. Despite this talented lineup, the film's execution has drawn consistent criticism across multiple aspects of production and storytelling.
