Neena Gupta Reflects on Relationship with Vivian Richards and Single Motherhood

In a candid revelation, veteran actress Neena Gupta has opened up about her past relationship with West Indies cricket legend Vivian Richards and the conscious decision to embrace single motherhood without marriage. The actress, who shares daughter Masaba Gupta with Richards, addressed persistent questions about their bond and the practical realities that prevented them from tying the knot.

"Go Ask Him": Neena's Candid Response About Love

During a recent interview with Shubhankar Mishra, when questioned about whether she and Richards were truly in love, Neena Gupta responded with characteristic frankness. "Go ask him. Everyone is afraid to ask him. Why do all of you ask only me?" she stated, before adding her perspective. "I think we were in love. Although we were together for only a short while, the time we spent together was wonderful."

Practical Realities Prevented Marriage

Explaining why marriage was never a consideration despite their relationship, Gupta pointed to insurmountable practical obstacles. "It wasn't practical. Either I would have had to leave my job and go to the West Indies, or he would have had to give up his career and come to India; neither of which was possible," she revealed. This stark reality check ultimately shaped their separate paths.

Blinded by Love: The Decision to Have a Child

Reflecting on that period of her life, the actress admitted that emotions rather than practicality guided her choices. "But at that time, I was blind in love. In such a scenario, who listens to others? Who stops to reflect on their decisions? Who listens to their parents?" she recalled. Despite the unconventional circumstances, Gupta made a deliberate choice. "It was my decision to have a child. Then I asked him (Vivian) if he was okay with me giving birth to his child, and he said yes."

Vivian Richards' Support and Single Parenthood Challenges

Gupta acknowledged that Richards never hesitated to publicly recognize Masaba as his daughter, providing crucial paternal acknowledgment. However, she was equally honest about the difficulties of raising a child alone. "Single parenthood comes with its own challenges," she noted, emphasizing that "raising a child alone is far from easy and may not always be ideal for the child."

A Warning to Young Women

In a separate interview with Humans Of Bombay, Neena Gupta offered stern advice to young women considering similar paths. She explicitly cautioned against viewing her experience as a blueprint. "Young girls ko main yeh kahungi, agar aap mere jaise bina shadi se bacha paida karna chaahte ho, bohot mushkil hai, mat karna. Don't do it because someone has done it," she stated, translating to: "My advice to all the young girls is that do not even think of having a baby without getting married, just because I did. It's very difficult, don't do it."

Neena Gupta welcomed her daughter Masaba in November 1989, and both mother and daughter have since carved successful careers in the entertainment and fashion industries respectively. Gupta's reflections provide a nuanced look at love, practical compromise, and the realities of unconventional family structures in the public eye.
