Neha Dhupia Reveals Anxiety Over Acting Jobs, Jokes About Akshaye Khanna's 6-Year Break
Neha Dhupia on anxiety as acting jobs dry up

Bollywood actress Neha Dhupia has offered a raw and honest glimpse into the emotional toll of an inconsistent acting career, revealing she experiences significant anxiety during prolonged periods without work. Despite recent acclaim for her performances in shows like Single Papa and Perfect Family, the actress confessed that success does not guarantee a steady stream of opportunities.

The Emotional Toll of an Unpredictable Career

In a candid conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Dhupia admitted that even after two decades in the film industry, the uncertainty can be overwhelming. "I do get anxiety when I'm not working," she stated. The actress shared a vulnerable moment, revealing, "Even after 20 years in the industry, when the lights are out, I do put my head into a pillow and cry. I did it three days ago."

She was quick to clarify that she does not intend to craft a sob story, emphasizing her deep love for the movie business. However, she highlighted the daunting reality that losing projects and facing constant judgment is challenging, despite the common advice for actors to develop a thick skin.

When Work Doesn't Lead to More Work

Dhupia elaborated on a frustrating paradox in the industry: doing good work does not automatically convert into more opportunities. "The conversion has to be there. If my work in the latest two shows doesn't convert into anything then there is no point," she explained. This uncertainty led her to reflect on the career of actor Akshaye Khanna, known for his highly selective choices and long gaps between films.

In a lighter vein, she remarked, "Then you see trajectory of Akshaye Khanna and then you think, 'Hum bhi 6 saal ghar hi baith jate hain' (We should also sit at home for 6 years)." Her comment comes as Khanna himself is enjoying a major career resurgence. His recent films, Chhaava and Dhurandhar, have been major successes. His portrayal of Rehman Dakait in particular became a viral sensation, contributing to Dhurandhar's massive box office earnings of over Rs 800 crore in India and Rs 1200 crore worldwide.

Navigating the Dry Spells

The actress described the difficulty of watching peers work while she faces a lull. "The part that matters the most is that when you are not working, everybody around you is working. You see life pass by," she said. Dhupia pointed out that the key difference between her and a newcomer is her experience in handling these anxious phases. "I have been anxious so many times," she added.

To cope with the exhausting nature of the business, she stays active with multiple ventures. "I get so tired when there is no acting jobs for 3-4 years but by the grace of God, I am never out of work because I do so many things. It is an exhausting but rewarding business," Dhupia concluded, striking a balance between acknowledging the struggle and expressing gratitude for her multifaceted career. Her interview, dated January 5, 2026, sheds light on the often-unseen pressures faced by actors beyond the glamour.
