Nick Jonas Reveals Malti's Fragile Birth: 1 Pound 11 Ounces, 3.5-Month NICU Battle
Nick Jonas Opens Up About Daughter Malti's Fragile Birth

Singer Nick Jonas has shared deeply emotional and previously private details about the challenging early days following the birth of his daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. In a heartfelt revelation, he described how she was born underweight and extremely fragile, marking the beginning of an intense parental journey.

'She Came Into The World Under Very Intense Circumstances'

During a recent interview on the Jay Shetty Podcast, Nick became emotional as he recalled Malti's birth, which was far more intense than he and his wife, actor Priyanka Chopra, had anticipated. He explained that their daughter arrived much earlier than expected, weighing just 1 pound, 11 ounces at birth.

"She came into the world under very intense circumstances, which I've never really talked about. We were expecting her to arrive in April, the year she was born. Then we get a call that it's going to be sooner... We got to the hospital and came out 1 pound, 11 ounces and purple basically," Nick shared. He added that Malti was immediately taken into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where nurses resuscitated her and provided round-the-clock care to support her fragile health.

12-Hour Hospital Shifts During The COVID-19 Pandemic

Nick also opened up about the emotional and physical toll that the extended hospital stay took on both him and Priyanka, especially as it coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple spent months shuttling between their home and the hospital, rarely leaving Malti's side during this critical period.

"It was Covid-19 time, and so my wife and I basically did 12-hour shifts at the hospital for 3.5 months. I can still smell it; there are always visceral things. It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day and to see other families going through a similar situation," he recounted. He described watching Malti fight for her health every single day, a testament to her resilience.

"She (Malti) fought every day for 3.5 months and slowly started to gain some weight. After six blood transfusions, she was doing great. We got to take her home after 3.5 months," Nick added, highlighting the gradual but steady progress that led to her eventual discharge.

Nick and Priyanka's Journey As Parents

Nick Jonas married actor Priyanka Chopra in 2018 in Rajasthan, with a Christian ceremony followed by a traditional Hindu wedding. The couple welcomed their daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas via surrogacy in January 2022, and her early health struggles have profoundly shaped their outlook on parenthood and life.

Over the years, both Nick and Priyanka have spoken about how these experiences have deepened their bond and appreciation for family. Nick expressed that he still feels "awestruck" that he gets to experience Malti's magic today, reflecting on the miraculous nature of her recovery.

Looking ahead, Nick will next be seen alongside Paul Rudd in Power Ballad, a film directed by John Carney that is scheduled to release on June 5 this year. This project marks another chapter in his multifaceted career, balancing his roles as an artist and a devoted father.
