Nick Jonas Reveals Harrowing Details of Daughter Malti's Premature Birth Journey
Nick Jonas has shared deeply personal and emotional details about the challenging circumstances surrounding the birth of his daughter with Priyanka Chopra, Malti Marie. The singer revealed that their newborn required immediate resuscitation and underwent multiple medical procedures after arriving prematurely in January 2022.
Emergency Arrival and Critical Medical Intervention
During a recent appearance on Jay Shetty's 'On Purpose' podcast, the 33-year-old musician recounted the unexpected early arrival of their first child, who was born via surrogate. Jonas described the situation as unfolding under "very intense circumstances," as reported by People magazine.
"We were expecting her to arrive in April of the year she was born, and we get a call that it's going to be sooner," Jonas explained. "So basically, we went into action."
The newborn arrived weighing just 1 pound, 11 ounces, significantly smaller than average. Jonas vividly recalled the moment of her birth, stating, "She came out ... purple," and credited the neonatal intensive care unit team with saving her life through immediate intervention.
Months of Hospital Vigil and Medical Challenges
Because Malti was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jonas and Chopra Jonas spent months dividing their time at the hospital. The couple maintained 12-hour shifts at the NICU for three and a half months as their daughter fought for survival and gradually gained strength.
During this extended hospital stay, Malti received six blood transfusions as part of her medical treatment. Jonas described the hospital environment as both comforting and frightening, noting that he could still recall the distinct smells and the shared experience with other families facing similar challenges.
"It was ... to be there every day and to see other families going through similar situations," he shared.
Recovery and Family Reflections
After three and a half months of intensive care, Malti steadily improved and was eventually able to go home. Jonas reported that she is now "doing great" and reflected on her remarkable journey.
"I feel like she knows how she entered the world and what that first chapter of her life was like," Jonas said. "And so every day is a gift."
Priyanka Chopra's Previous Revelations
Priyanka Chopra has also spoken about this difficult period, revealing that Malti was delivered a full trimester early and was "smaller than my hand." She recalled standing in the operating room as doctors intubated the newborn, uncertain whether her daughter would survive the critical early moments.
In the years since, the family has embraced simple, meaningful rituals. Chopra described their favorite tradition as "Sunday morning snuggles in bed," calling time spent together the greatest luxury in their lives.
Professional Updates and Future Projects
On the professional front, Priyanka Chopra continues her acting career with several upcoming projects. She will appear alongside Mahesh Babu in SS Rajamouli's next directorial, 'Varanasi,' where she plays the character Mandakini. The film, which also features Prithviraj Sukumaran, is scheduled for release during Sankranti 2027.
Additionally, Chopra will star in 'The Bluff,' portraying a 19th-century Caribbean pirate. This film is set to premiere on February 25, marking another significant role in her expanding filmography.
