Nearly two decades after the release of his 2007 romantic anthology 'Salaam-E-Ishq', filmmaker Nikkhil Advani is developing a sequel. Titled 'Salaam-E-Ishq 2', the project aims to transform the original film into a franchise with a fresh narrative centered on three couples whose lives intersect through love, fate, and personal choices. The film will delve into commitment issues, social pressures, and emotional conflicts in contemporary India. Advani is currently writing the script and plans to begin production early next year.
'Salaam-E-Ishq 2' Plot and Cast Plans
According to Variety India, the sequel will not continue the exact storyline of the original film. Instead, 'Salaam-E-Ishq 2' will follow three new couples facing distinct challenges in their relationships. The report indicates that the film will offer a fresh perspective on love and relationships in modern India. The original 'Salaam-E-Ishq' boasted a large ensemble cast, including Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, Vidya Balan, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Akshaye Khanna, and Sohail Khan, among others. Advani now plans to assemble another prominent multi-generational cast for the sequel, though no casting announcements have been made yet. The sequel will be rooted in contemporary relationship conflicts rather than nostalgia, while retaining the anthology format that defined the first film.
Nikkhil Advani Returns to Romance Genre
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy will return to compose the music for 'Salaam-E-Ishq 2'. The trio created the original film's soundtrack, which included popular songs such as 'Dil Kya Kare', 'Mera Dil', 'Tenu Leke', and 'Saiyaan Re'. These songs continue to resonate with listeners years after the film's release. The sequel marks Advani's return to the romance genre after more than a decade, following his 2015 film 'Katti Batti'. In recent years, he has focused on action and historical projects like 'Batla House', 'Vedaa', 'Mumbai Diaries', and 'Freedom at Midnight'. His upcoming project, 'The Revolutionaries', is a historical freedom fighter drama set to premiere on Prime Video later this year.
'Salaam-E-Ishq' did not perform well at the box office in 2007, but it later gained a dedicated following for its music and emotional themes. In a recent conversation with Variety India, Advani described the film as 'almost a death blow' to his career. He added, 'It's a good time for a (Salaam-e-Ishq) franchise. It's primarily because I know the mistakes I made.'
