Paramvir Cheema's Calculated Approach: Building an Audience Base on OTT Before Venturing into Films
In a recent interview, actor Paramvir Cheema opened up about his deliberate and strategic career path in the entertainment industry. The Jalandhar-born performer, who has gained significant recognition through his work on digital platforms, emphasized the importance of taking measured steps in his cinematic journey.
From OTT Breakthrough to Silver Screen Success
Cheema, who first captured audience attention with his compelling performances in series like "Kaleerein", "Jeet Ki Zid", and "Half CA", experienced his breakthrough moment with Vikramaditya Motwane's web-series "Black Warrant". This was followed by notable roles in "Chamak" and "Tabbar", which solidified his presence in the digital space.
"I'm not from the industry; I'm an outsider. I don't have anyone from my family in the industry. So, I've to work a little harder to create a mark for myself in the hearts and minds of people," Cheema explained, highlighting the challenges faced by those without industry connections.
The Strategic Decision: OTT First, Films Later
Cheema revealed that his decision to establish himself on OTT platforms before transitioning to films was a conscious one. "When I first worked on OTT, people started appreciating me. So, an audience base was built from there, and eventually I got confidence that, 'People like me'. It made me feel that people are interested in watching (good) content, unlike earlier times where they would watch film (of only) stars," he shared with PTI.
The actor further elaborated on his thought process: "I knew that not many people will go to the theatre to watch my films, and I didn't want to start out with a flop film. Hence, I build an audience (base)." This pragmatic approach allowed him to gradually understand the reach and impact of cinema while honing his craft.
Recent Film Projects and Future Endeavors
Cheema made his Hindi film debut with Aanand L Rai's romance-drama "Tere Ishq Mein", starring alongside Dhanush and Kriti Sanon. His latest release, "Border 2", has emerged as a major theatrical hit, featuring him in the role of Subedar Nishaan Singh alongside industry veterans like Sunny Deol and Varun Dhawan.
"Doing a film with Sunny sir, Varun bhai, Diljit bhai, this is such a big cast, and if I'm able to stand out and create a mark for myself, then there's nothing better I could ask for," Cheema expressed with enthusiasm about his experience on the project.
Looking ahead, the actor has multiple projects in the pipeline:
- The Prime Video series "The Pyramid Scheme" alongside Ranvir Shorey and Shekhar Suman
- A Punjabi film titled "Pitt Siyapa" with Sonam Bajwa
- Another Punjabi film where he plays the lead hero opposite Sonam Bajwa
Reflections on Missed Opportunities and Career Choices
Cheema also touched upon a significant career crossroad he encountered. He was among the actors who auditioned for the title role in Imtiaz Ali's "Amar Singh Chamkila", which eventually went to Diljit Dosanjh. Simultaneously, he received an offer to play the lead in the SonyLIV series "Chamak", which he ultimately chose.
"With regards to 'Chamkila', I don't regret that I didn't do the film but the thing that I feel more is that I wanted to work with Imtiaz sir," Cheema reflected. "When I saw it ('Chamkila'), I don't think I would have been able to give the performance that Diljit (Dosanjh) gave because he gave such a good performance and he is also a singer. But yes, I regret that I missed out on working with Imtiaz sir."
Despite this, Cheema remains positive about his choices, stating that "Chamak" was "a good show and it was fun" to work on.
The Way Forward: One Step at a Time
As Cheema continues to navigate his career, he maintains his philosophy of gradual progression. "I'm doing a Punjabi film as a lead (hero) with Sonam (Bajwa). I'm taking one small step at a time (in films)," he affirmed, underscoring his commitment to steady growth rather than rushing into projects.
His journey serves as an inspiring example for aspiring actors, particularly those without industry backgrounds, demonstrating how strategic planning, patience, and consistent effort can pave the way for sustainable success in the competitive world of entertainment.
