Sandeep Patil Recalls Missed Opportunity with Amitabh Bachchan After Coolie Accident

In a recent interview, former Indian cricketer Sandeep Patil has shared a little-known story about how he almost shared screen space with the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan. This potential collaboration was derailed by Bachchan's near-fatal accident on the sets of the 1983 film 'Coolie', an event that left the entire nation in shock and devastated fans.

The Fateful Incident on the Coolie Set

Amitabh Bachchan's accident occurred during an action sequence when he was punched by co-actor Puneet Issar, resulting in a serious abdominal injury. The actor was hospitalized and nearly escaped death, undergoing multiple surgeries and being placed on a ventilator. Reports from that time suggested he was briefly declared clinically dead before doctors stabilized him.

Reflecting on the traumatic period, Bachchan had earlier told Stardust magazine, "I never knew that I was going to die. I knew that there was something very wrong with me but I never knew that I was going to die." He described the emotional aftermath, stating, "The worst phase is when you discover that what they have told you is, in fact, true. Your entire body is finished from within." This recovery was so significant that Bachchan now celebrates a second birthday on August 2, marking his return to life.

Patil's Film Plans and the Unfulfilled Shoot

Sandeep Patil, who briefly stepped into films in 1983 with 'Kabhie Ajnabee' following India's historic win at the 1983 Cricket World Cup, revealed that his acting stint was widely misunderstood. Many believed the World Cup fame had gone to his head, and theories circulated about why he skipped the West Indies tour post-victory. However, Patil clarified that the reality was different.

During a chat with Vickey Lalwani, Patil disclosed, "I had the chance to share the screen with Mr Bachchan. Nobody knows this because it has never been reported. I asked Vijay Singhrao Patwardhan to call Mr Bachchan for Kabhi Ajnabee after returning from the 1983 World Cup. It was very sweet of him—he agreed to do a special appearance in the film."

The planned shoot was scheduled in Bangalore, but it never materialized. Patil recalled, "We were supposed to shoot in Bangalore. We had reached there with our camera team. Mr Bachchan was shooting for 'Coolie' and was staying at the West End hotel with Jaya Bachchan. The shoot was scheduled for 6 pm, but he didn’t arrive even by 7. Since he is known for his punctuality, I went to the hotel."

Upon knocking on the cottage door, Jaya Bachchan opened it and informed Patil about the accident. She explained that Bachchan had suffered a near-fatal injury on the Coolie set and had been flown to Bombay on a chartered flight for emergency treatment.

Reflections on a Lost Opportunity

Patil expressed regret over the missed chance, saying, "It was my bad luck. But it was very sweet of him to agree. Just imagine—Amitabh Bachchan and Sandeep Patil together on the big screen. It could have changed my life." This revelation adds a new layer to the historical narrative of Bollywood and cricket intersections in the early 1980s.

The incident underscores how unforeseen events can alter career paths and collaborative dreams in the entertainment industry. Bachchan's recovery and subsequent return to stardom remain a testament to his resilience, while Patil's story highlights the 'what-ifs' that often shape personal and professional histories.
